Maintenance Worker

About the Role

Join a nationally recognized team of professionals within one of the most highly regarded park systems in the country. This position performs a variety of routine, manual labor tasks as part of an athletic field or park maintenance crew, contributing to the upkeep of over 25,000 acres of parkland, nine RECenters, eight golf courses, three lakefront parks, and more.

Reports each morning to the Area 1 maintenance shop at 1929 Pimmit Drive, Falls Church, VA, and is dispatched to assigned parks. This role is part of the overall labor team and includes hauling and equipment operation.

Responsibilities

• Performs maintenance on park facilities, including athletic fields, sport courts, picnic areas, playgrounds, amphitheaters, trails, restrooms, parking lots, signs, and fencing.
• Conducts grounds maintenance tasks such as mowing, snow removal, litter removal, rough carpentry, light construction, minor repairs, and painting.
• Operates a tractor/bucket loader with attachments, small-engine park maintenance equipment (e.g., infield groomers, utility vehicles, mowers), and gas/battery-powered equipment (e.g., trimmers, blowers, chainsaws).
• Collects and disposes of refuse, yard debris, recyclables, and other solid waste materials.
• Assists customers at homeowner's disposal facilities, including spill cleanup and traffic control.
• Clears sidewalks of ice and snow; removes, cleans, and replaces manhole covers.
• Inspects and repairs sewer lines, assists in operating sewer rodding machines, and performs minor repairs to sewer equipment.
• Mixes and pours concrete for foundations or other construction repair work.
• Operates various types of trucks (e.g., dump truck, loader, flusher) to transport equipment, tools, or crews.
• Reads meters and cleans facilities, including removing trash and litter.
• Loads and unloads trucks; moves furniture, heavy equipment, and materials.
• Performs routine building maintenance (e.g., replacing light bulbs, minor furniture repairs).
• Repairs and maintains walkways, gutters, downspouts, and irrigation systems (e.g., sprinklers, valves, pipes).
• Applies pesticides, fertilizer, and other chemicals under supervision.
• Maintains and repairs grounds and turf, including vegetation control and landscaping tasks (e.g., propagating beds, edging, mulching, planting).
• Performs minor building and equipment repairs.
• Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines; reports unsafe conditions.

Requirements

• Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to pass a criminal background check, driving record check, and pre-employment medical evaluation.

Skills

• Basic knowledge of construction and maintenance of asphalt and concrete.
• Working knowledge of small equipment (e.g., weed eater, push mower, power tamper, chainsaw, concrete saw, gas generator).
• Basic knowledge of air compressors and pneumatic tools.
• Ability to use and perform basic maintenance on hand tools and machinery.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices.
• Ability to perform duties requiring manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude.
• Ability to operate various types of motor vehicles and grounds equipment.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to work outside with regular exposure to severe weather, noxious fumes, and high levels of dust.
• Ability to perform medium to heavy manual labor.
• Ability to maintain effective relationships with customers, employees, and supervisors.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience performing maintenance activities using a tractor/bucket loader with attachments, small-engine park maintenance equipment (e.g., infield groomers, utility vehicles, mowers), and gas/battery-powered equipment (e.g., trimmers, blowers, chainsaws).
• Experience with repair and maintenance of outdoor maintenance equipment.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to bend, twist, turn, stand, sit, and stoop.
• Ability to climb on and off equipment.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
• Ability to operate grounds equipment and motor vehicles/trailers.
• Ability to stand or walk for extended periods.
• Ability to traverse uneven ground.
• Ability to work in variable weather conditions while performing physical labor.

Schedule

• 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday, with overtime required when necessary.
• Occasional weekend, evening, and holiday work required.
• Positions are subject to transfer to other maintenance operation locations.
• Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the position.
• Emergency Service Personnel status.
