Maintenance VI – Senior PLC Controls Technician - Mt. Airy NC

About the Role

This role is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing electronic and electrical equipment, and providing technical support to team members. Key responsibilities include hands-on repair and replacement of electrical and PLC components, electrical/control system analysis, programming, and modification on manufacturing equipment to drive improvements in machine reliability and uptime. Tools used include troubleshooting, root cause analysis, system analysis, and preventive maintenance solutions.

Responsibilities

• Abide by and participate in the implementation and ongoing oversight of all company safety standards and regulations.
• Troubleshoot and maintain equipment relating to electrical, PLC, and electro-mechanical issues; perform electrical, PLC, and HMI maintenance.
• Manage work orders, track progress, and perform necessary follow-up.
• Recommend improvements to techniques and procedures for analyzing, troubleshooting, building, maintaining, and repairing complex equipment.
• Diagnose electrical and control problems, determining corrective actions using blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs as necessary.
• Utilize AutoCAD to review and develop electrical and control drawings.
• Complete repairs in conformance with established standards; assist in formulating standards and work procedures.
• Assist in developing and continuously improving the preventive maintenance program.
• Assemble and test new motor control devices, switch panels, transformers, generator windings, and other electrical equipment.
• Document recommendations, modifications, or replacements via CMMS.
• Create and modify programming in various plant automation systems to improve control strategy, increase capacity, and implement other enhancements.
• Repair, rebuild, and install centrifugal, gear, and diaphragm pumps, pipe systems, plumbing, machinery, or equipment as needed.
• Diagnose mechanical and/or electrical problems using blueprints, electrical schematics, repair manuals, internet resources, or parts catalogs.
• Manage the site's spare parts inventory, including weekly monitoring, ordering supplies, equipment, and materials for projects.
• Respond to complaints and questions regarding maintenance projects.
• Coordinate maintenance and repair work with operations departments to ensure quick turnaround and smooth facility functioning.
• Maintain regular interaction with Facility Manager, Operations Supervisors, and Operations Managers.
• Participate in training and continuous learning opportunities; meet training or certification requirements.
• Maintain ongoing one-on-one communication with team members.
• Perform job-related administrative tasks such as completing daily shift/maintenance records and maintaining time/attendance.

Requirements

• Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school in Industrial Electrical, Electrical Technology, or a similar field; or completion of a four-year apprenticeship program in electrical/electronic technology, mechanical technology, or manufacturing technology; or a combination of partial education and a minimum of 7 years of Industrial Electrician or Maintenance Technician experience, including at least 2 years in PLC troubleshooting.
• Experience with Siemens and Allen Bradley PLCs (Simatic Step 7, RSLogix 5000, RSLogix 500, RSLinx, etc.) is highly preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence; speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
• Proficiency in math, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, computation of rate, ratio, percent, and interpretation of bar graphs.
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.

Skills

• Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
• Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Good working knowledge of troubleshooting and repairing VFDs, motor/wiring configurations, PLCs, computers, electrical schematics, control circuits, and preventive/predictive maintenance.
• 2-5 years of experience in maintaining industrial machines and electronics/machine electrical systems.
• Experience developing preventive maintenance (PM) programs preferred.
• Experience diagnosing proprietary machinery preferred.
• Experience with starting a new manufacturing facility/production line or unit is preferred.

Qualifications

• PLC Technician Certificate or PLC Technician Certificate II.
