MAINTENANCE TRANSPORTATION WORKER - 08112026-79551

Location: Gallatin, TN – Department of Transportation, Region 3 – District 37 Operations – Maintenance Section (Wilson & Sumner Counties).

Pay

$3,631.00 – $4,533.00 per month ($43,572.00 – $54,396.00 annually).

Schedule

Full-time. May require weekends, holidays, variable hours, on-call rotation, and exposure to inclement weather.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or General Educational Development diploma.
• Possess and maintain a valid Tennessee Class D driver’s license.
• If under age 21: obtain a Tennessee Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with allowable Code O, K, and 52 restrictions (no Code E or L) within eleven months at your own expense; testing must be completed in a manual transmission vehicle.
• If age 21 or older: obtain a Tennessee Class A CDL with N endorsement (no Code L) within eleven months of hire at your own expense; testing must be completed in a manual transmission vehicle.
• TDOT employees who already hold a Class A CDL when turning 21 must obtain the N endorsement within three months of their 21st birthday.
• Pass a pre-employment drug test; commercial drivers and safety-impact employees are subject to additional drug and alcohol testing during employment.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance on TDOT infrastructure: repair/install signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts.
• Conduct roadway maintenance: litter pickup, debris/carcass removal, mowing, shoulder maintenance, snow/ice removal, drainage structure cleaning/replacement, vegetation removal, pothole repair, and traffic control.
• Operate light and heavy equipment (dump trucks, trailers, pickups, loaders, tractors with mowers, sweepers, rollers, forklifts, skid steers, excavators) and perform pre- and post-trip inspections.
• Perform preventive and minor maintenance on TDOT assets; identify deterioration and deficiencies.
• Assist in integrating quality management into maintenance activities aligned with Asset Management goals.
• Promote a safety-focused work environment: recognize hazards, assess risks, and mitigate safety concerns.
• Apply TDOT Policy 305-01 (PPE Guide), Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Policies, and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices to establish safe work zones.
• Complete all required safety and flagging training.
• Track data related to employee time, equipment, and material usage on projects.
• Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
• Mentor and offer basic technical support for maintenance tasks.
• Assist the public during emergencies (e.g., floods, tornadoes, vehicle accidents, hazardous material spills).
• Communicate effectively with foremen, peers, and emergency crews about lane closures, incident severity, and response status.
• Maintain accurate records of activities during roadside operations, work sites, and emergencies.
• Stay current on emergency operations training.
• Support local law enforcement at crash sites and assist stranded motorists as required.
• Participate in the Transportation Worker Proficiency Program: complete training, maintain a Personal Advancement Log (PAL), submit records on time, and prepare for exams/demonstrations.

Skills

• Skill in operating light and heavy highway equipment.
• Basic vehicle and equipment maintenance/repair knowledge.
• Ability to recognize and mitigate potential hazards to transportation work crews.
• Computer proficiency with applicable programs, applications, and systems.
• For Transportation Worker II and III: Knowledge of the Tennessee Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, traffic rules/regulations, temporary signing, safety precautions, and project logistics/worksite planning.
• For Transportation Worker III: Ability to lead teams, train individuals, and estimate/procure materials.
