Position Overview

The Department of Housing and Department of Residence Life are newly-formed Cleveland State University departments previously managed by an outside vendor. This shift aims to better support students and enhance the residential experience by building a dedicated team of housing professionals.

Job Summary

Performs complex preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on general carpentry, mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) systems. Utilizes advanced diagnostics skills and tools to conduct detailed inspections. Manages emergency repairs across carpentry, mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) systems. Ensures building systems operate efficiently and in compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Works individually and collaboratively with other trades, outside vendors, and Cleveland State University (CSU) employees. Maintains and communicates accurate records of maintenance activities and parts inventory. Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Maintenance Technician 1:
    • High school diploma, GED, or state recognized equivalent.
    • Experience in general maintenance, carpentry, residential home repair, construction, or related field, may include vocational training.
    • Ability to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds. If lifting is over fifty (50) pounds, ability to buddy lift or use of tools to aid in lifting.
    • Ability to climb and work from ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, and various arial lifts in excess of twenty-five (25) feet.
    • Valid driver’s license and ability to establish and maintain driver eligibility under CSU Driving and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Maintenance Technician 2:
    • High school diploma, GED or state recognized equivalent.
    • Three (3) years of experience in general maintenance, carpentry, residential home repair, construction, or related field e.g. HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. May include vocational training.
    • Fall Protection Certification or ability to obtain certification within one (1) year of hire.
    • Asbestos Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Certification and Confined Space Certification or ability to obtain certifications within one (1) year of hire. (Applicable to Maintenance Technician 2 in Building Operations Department)
    • Ability to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds. If lifting is over fifty (50) pounds, the ability to buddy lift or use of tools to aid in lifting.
    • Ability to climb and work from ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, and various arial lifts in excess of twenty-five (25) feet.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Maintenance Technician 1:
    • Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) or other workplace safety certifications.
    • Maintenance or repair experience in an institutional or industrial environment.
    • Welding experience.
  • Maintenance Technician 2:
    • Maintenance or repair experience working in a commercial, industrial, institutional, or large-scale facility.
    • Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) or other workplace safety certifications.
    • Technical certification or training in carpentry, mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) building system maintenance e.g. HVAC, electrical, and plumbing.
    • Experience with building automation systems (BAS) and energy management systems (EMS).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Maintenance Technician 1:
    • Knowledge of carpentry, masonry, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and HVAC building systems.
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to work as an individual contributor and an effective team member.
    • Ability to be dependable and punctual in reporting to work as scheduled.
    • Strong attention to detail, ability to follow instructions and work with minimal supervision while maintaining a high standard of safety and quality.
    • Ability to use appropriate hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment safely and effectively.
    • Proficient in use of digital and mobile (i.e., phone or tablet) maintenance work order systems, email, and messaging.
  • Maintenance Technician 2:
    • Advanced proficiency in carpentry, building infrastructure and mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) building system maintenance e.g. HVAC, electrical, and plumbing.
    • Ability to achieve and maintain highest standards of safety, quality, and efficiency.
    • Ability to troubleshoot complex problems, and the experience to implement effective solutions quickly.
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to work as an individual contributor and an effective team member.
    • Ability to be dependable and punctual in reporting to work as scheduled.
    • Strong attention to detail, ability to follow instructions and work with minimal supervision while maintaining a high standard of safety and quality.
    • Ability to use appropriate hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment safely and effectively.
    • Proficient in use of digital and mobile (i.e. phone or tablet) maintenance work order systems, email, and messaging.
