Maintenance Tech III First Shift - Distribution Center

What You’ll Do

  • Perform advanced troubleshooting, repair, and diagnostics for conveyor systems, automation equipment, electrical systems, and material handling equipment (MHE).
  • Serve as the technical escalation point for complex mechanical, electrical, and controls-related issues.
  • Troubleshoot and support PLC-controlled systems, VFDs, servo drives, sensors, encoders, and associated controls (Allen-Bradley preferred).
  • Identify root causes of recurring equipment failures and implement long-term corrective solutions.
  • Ensure 100% completion of Preventive Maintenance (PM) programs, while recommending improvements to PM strategies to reduce downtime and extend asset life.
  • Partner with leadership to support continuous improvement and system reliability initiatives.
  • Mentor and support Maintenance Technicians I and II through hands-on guidance, troubleshooting support, and knowledge sharing.
  • Aid in onboarding and training of new maintenance team members.
  • Maintain strong working relationships across Operations, Engineering, Safety, and Leadership.
  • Support or lead capital projects, equipment installations, and system upgrades.
  • Coordinate with vendors and contractors, ensuring work is completed safely, correctly, and to Staples standards.
  • Validate work quality and confirm operational readiness following installations and repairs.
  • Complete work orders with clear technical detail, including corrective actions and root-cause observations.
  • Communicate effectively on downtime events, equipment risks, and maintenance priorities.
  • Lead by example with safety, documentation accuracy, and professionalism.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 5+ years of industrial maintenance experience in a distribution center, manufacturing, or automated environment
  • Advanced electrical troubleshooting experience ranging from 24V DC to 460V AC (3-phase)
  • Strong working knowledge of: Automated conveyor systems and controls, Industrial electrical, electronics, hydraulics, and pneumatics, PLC troubleshooting (Allen-Bradley preferred), VFDs, motors, sensors, relays, and control circuits
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals
  • Proficiency using electrical diagnostic tools (digital and analog meters)
  • Ability to complete detailed work orders and documentation
  • Strong safety mindset and ability to work independently during critical events
  • Ability to be trained and certified on powered industrial equipment (forklift, EPJ, etc.)

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Trade school or technical degree (Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics)
  • Prior experience in a lead or senior maintenance role
  • Experience supporting automation upgrades or capital installs
  • Familiarity with reliability or continuous improvement practices
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal)

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Role operates in a warehouse environment with exposure to temperature variations, heights (up to 50 feet), welding fumes, dust, vibration, and industrial chemicals
  • Regular bending, lifting, stretching, and reaching
  • Continuous standing and/or walking (up to 5 miles daily)
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and access elevated platforms safely
  • Ability to work in a moderate noise environment
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds and work safely around automated equipment
