About the Role

This Maintenance Tech I position is designed to rotate between different roles within the manufacturing plant based on business needs. The employee will receive required training before being assigned to any of the following roles: Electrician, Machinist, Mechanic, and Boiler Operator.

Responsibilities

Machinist

• Fabricate, design, and redesign parts for all machinery in the plant.
• Operate all machine type equipment (lathes, drill press, grinders, mills, and saws).
• Design and redesign parts for shop machining, repair and modify molds and hardware.
• Fabricate and repair parts for shop machinery.
• Perform welding as needed.
• Complete necessary paperwork for each job order.

Electrician

• Test, install, program, assemble, and maintain electronic equipment and components of processing operations.
• Be familiar with the function and purpose of all electrical devices used within the plant.
• Assist in the repair and/or replacement of mechanical equipment.
• Follow the National Electric Code Handbook.
• Install, troubleshoot, and program computers used in processing operations.
• Operate shop machinery and use electrical test equipment.
• Repair, replace, and install components of electric devices.
• Perform basic troubleshooting on electrical equipment.
• Understand and troubleshoot electrical/electronic control systems.
• Fabricate and install conduit systems.
• Perform electronic maintenance on motors and controls.

Boiler Operator

• Maintain steam pressure, air pressure, and hydraulic pressure needed for tire curing, heating oil, and plant heating.
• Check the log book daily for potential problems.
• Check compressors, add lubrication oil, and verify crank case levels.
• Blow the air dryer and air bundle.
• Check temperatures of the air compressor and cooling water level.
• Ensure lubricators are operational.
• Blow water columns and perform bottom blow to remove sediment from the boiler.
• Conduct chemical tests and check the conductivity of boiler water.
• Add chemicals as needed.
• Check pumps and monitor gauges.

Mechanic

• Provide mechanical work, maintenance, rebuild services, and ongoing repairs to various machines in the plant.
• Check daily for assignments related to machines with mechanical problems.
• Responsible for overall repair and/or rebuild of shop machines.
• Log machines for downtime during repairs using clock number and log them back in upon completion.
• Perform rebuilds on specific machines for worn-out or modification maintenance.
• Handle day-to-day maintenance of machines.
• Perform preventive/predictive maintenance procedures.
• Rebuild parts for various machines.
• Assist with electrical work and understand/repair electrical components of machines.

Requirements

• High School diploma/GED required, or commit to obtaining a GED within 12 months of hire date through the Carlstar-sponsored GED program.
• Certification as a Forklift Operator.
• Three to five years of industrial experience.
• Minimum of 1 year in a manufacturing/distribution operation preferred.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while meeting production and quality goals.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid forklift or equipment license as needed.
• Must pass an in-house mechanical examination with a score of 70% or better.

Ergonomic & Physical Requirements

• Must meet the Ergonomic and Physical Base Score for this position.
• Must pass company agility and drug tests.
• Exerting 200 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 75 lbs. frequently, and/or in excess of 30 lbs. constantly to move objects.
• Stand 90% and walk 10% of a normal day.
• Lift/carry 25 lbs. to 100 lbs. (any lifting over 70 lbs. must be completed with assistance).
• Push/pull: 50 lbs. constantly, up to 250 lbs. occasionally.
• Pinch minimum 12 lbs.
• Grasp minimum 125 lbs.
• Full range of motion required: Cervical, shoulders, elbow, wrist, fingers, hands, trunk twist, and feet.
