About the role

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager or Supervisor, the Maintenance Tech is responsible for maintaining, cleaning, and repairing equipment in the plant, buying point facilities, and office areas. All levels are responsible for maintaining proper paperwork and documentation. The role offers a structured promotion path with increasing responsibilities and skill requirements at each level.

  • Maintenance Technician I: Entry-level position. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of maintenance duties in peanut shelling operations and buying points.
  • Maintenance Technician II: Journey-level position. Fully competent to perform duties independently, with basic fabricator skills and machine troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Maintenance Technician III: Requires experience from Levels I and II, plus advanced fabrication skills and beginning electrical experience. Demonstrates advanced troubleshooting and independent repair.
  • Maintenance Technician IV: Requires experience from Levels I-III, plus advanced electrical skills including instrumentation and programming. Must be able to direct other maintenance employees in the absence of the manager or supervisor.

Promotion to the next level requires a minimum of one year of experience at the current level, successful demonstration of required proficiencies, and completion of a 120-day probationary period.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled maintenance and repair of plant and buying point facilities and equipment; prioritize, schedule, assign, and coordinate work to accomplish a wide variety of duties.
  • Maintain tools and shop in a clean and sanitary condition for use within a shelling facility.
  • Assist in the purchase, installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical wiring and fixtures.
  • Troubleshoot and repair or replace fans, motors, and lighting circuits; perform routine mechanical and electrical maintenance.
  • Operate equipment and machines such as saws, drill presses, and various hand and power tools for repair and maintenance work; maintain tools and equipment in safe, clean, and proper working condition.
  • Ensure compliance with safety practices, procedures, and applicable federal, state, and local codes and regulations.
  • Maintain records related to labor, materials, and work orders.
  • Operate trucks to pick up and deliver equipment and supplies.
  • Follow ofi Peanut Shelling safety policies, PPE guidelines, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Preventive Control Rules, and Occupational Safety Rules.
  • Assist plant operations personnel in sanitary efforts to comply with Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) guidelines, customer specifications, and Preventive Control Rules.
  • Use only food-grade grease in areas with potential food contact surfaces.
  • Inspect equipment and surrounding areas after maintenance to verify safe operation per manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Assist in identifying sources of contamination.
  • Ensure strict adherence to Lock Out Tag Out, Confined Space, Working at Heights, Hot Work Permits, and At-Risk activity policies; complete all required permits, work orders, and documentation accurately.
  • Execute the preventive maintenance program and suggest improvements as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including tasks not explicitly outlined in this description.

Physical demands include frequent standing, walking, sitting, use of hands, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking, and hearing.

Requirements

  • Maintenance Technician I: High school diploma required; technical college preferred. One year of maintenance experience or a technical diploma.
  • Maintenance Technician II: High school diploma required; technical college preferred. Two years of maintenance experience or a technical diploma plus one year of experience.
  • Maintenance Technician III: High school diploma required; technical college preferred. Three years of maintenance experience or a technical diploma plus two years of experience. One year of fabrication experience required.
  • Maintenance Technician IV: High school diploma required; technical college preferred. Four years of maintenance experience or a technical diploma plus three years of experience. One year of fabrication and one year of electrical experience required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Forklift experience preferred for Tech I, required for Tech II-IV.
  • Experience in a food manufacturing facility preferred.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work in extreme conditions, including heat and cold.
  • Flexible work schedule required; may include weekends, holidays, and nights.

This role is performed on-site at a facility that processes peanuts. Employees may routinely work in areas where peanuts and related allergens are present and may be exposed by contact or through the air.
