About the role

The Maintenance Specialist, Airside is responsible for operating vehicles, machinery, tools, and heavy equipment on airport properties to perform maintenance, operational, construction, and safety services.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains all airport properties.
  • Operates vehicles, machinery, tools, and construction equipment to perform airport service, construction, and operational activities, to include but not be limited to turf management, pavement management, snow removal, spreading stone, grading roads, clearing drains and culverts, removing trash, moving equipment, loading and unloading materials, and mounting signs.
  • Operates vehicles and heavy machinery safely in areas congested with airplanes, other vehicles, and/or pedestrians, and in adverse weather conditions on runways, taxiways, movement areas, non-movement areas, perimeter roadways, and other property areas.
  • Ensures proper operation and operator level of maintenance on heavy machinery and other equipment assigned and required for job duties.
  • Supports and maintains the Airports daily pavement management, assessing issues and facilitating repairs to ensure compliance at all times to FAA Part 139 and aircraft safety.
  • Affords backup assistance to all other airport maintenance departments as directed, especially with moving large items and equipment.
  • Performs snow removal with specialized heavy equipment, within specific Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) specifications and time constraints while in constant communication with ATC, other departments, each other, and management.
  • Performs FAA FAR Part 139 training and testing annually, maintaining knowledge of FAA specifications for the airfield.
  • Conducts basic maintenance on vehicles and small engines.
  • Conducts heavy and construction equipment training for all applicable staff.
  • Conducts recurrent training and maintains training records.
  • Works safely around underground utilities, following all safety procedures.
  • Maintains airfield communication with air traffic control tower (ATC) and ramp control tower in congested areas on multiple frequencies.
  • Responds to airport emergencies and inclement weather incidents during all hours to include emergency pavement repairs or other Part 139 discrepancies.
  • Performs trash pick-up throughout many acres of property to include regular rounds through neighborhoods and along property roads.
  • Performs routine clerical duties, work order management and notations necessary for proper Part 139 documentation requirements and policies.
  • Utilizes basic computer skills for training, testing, and GIS data entry.
  • Works off-hour schedule and overtime as needed for nighttime operations to include mowing, pavement repairs, and winter operations.
  • May take occasional on-call duties that require the ability to accept calls and respond to BNA in a timely manner.
  • Provides escorts on the airfield as needed.
  • Maintains an active CDL license in the State of Tennessee to operate heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Maintains Movement Area Driving Permit and completes annual training.
  • Trains and directs the work of new staff and subordinates where directed.
  • Reports airport security concerns.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2-4 years of heavy equipment operation related experience
  • 2-4 years of related experience or comparable Military training
  • Valid Driver's License - Class D
  • Secure ramp driving certification within 180 days of hire
  • Forklift certification within 90 days of hire
  • Valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) - Class B within 1 year of hire
