Responsibilities

• Serves as lead worker (e.g., provides work direction, training) over inmates or other assigned staff in performance of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance repair work (e.g., electrical, carpentry, grounds keeping, plumbing).
• Performs semi-skilled and skilled maintenance repair of equipment (e.g., light fixtures, electrical outlets, switches, motors, appliances, electrical circuits, installs fixtures, repairs and adjusts fans, clocks, cookers, electrical components of heating and cooling systems, consoles, replaces disconnects and fuses on various electrical equipment).
• Performs semi-skilled and skilled carpentry repairs (e.g., doors, locks, cabinets, chairs, desks, floors, walls, windows, stairways, partitions).
• Performs semi-skilled and skilled repair of plumbing equipment (e.g., water and steam lines, sewer pipes, trap fittings, plumbing fixtures, pumps, regulators, valves, faucets, toilets, sinks, bathtubs, heating radiators, chilled water lines).
• Performs interior custodial duties (e.g., mops, sweeps, waxes floors, washes walls and windows).
• Performs exterior grounds keeping duties and removes snow and ice from sidewalks.
• Inspects buildings and equipment for needed repairs or replacements on a continuous basis.
• Performs systematic and routine preventive maintenance of assigned area.
• Operates machine tools and welding equipment in making repairs to metal parts and equipment.
• Ensures secure maintenance of tools and completes tool counts and inventories.
• Assists in related job crafts as required.
• Controls/restricts inmate movement to assigned areas and conducts searches of inmates when a breach of security is suspected.
• Responds to emergencies.
• Attends meetings and trainings and participates on institution committees.

Requirements

• Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition and subtraction, and in reading, writing, and speaking common English vocabulary.
• 12 months of training or 12 months of experience in maintenance repair (e.g., basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, and use of associated hand and power tools and equipment).
• Valid commercial driver's license required if motor equipment is of type and size regulated by Sections 4506.01 and 4506.12 of the Ohio revised code.
• In the Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry only, applicants must have successfully completed the mandated basic firefighter/introduction to fire behavior course (S-130/S-190).
• Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above may be substituted for the experience required, but not for the mandated licensure.
