Maintenance Operator II - IC&E Technician

About the Role

Under general supervision, with wide latitude for planning or laying out working details, this position performs highly complex mechanical and electrical work involved in the inspection, repair, installation, test, adjustment, and calibration of electrical equipment in generating stations and electrical substations, meters and instruments, automatic combustion control equipment, regulating devices, and related equipment in shop or in place.

Responsibilities

• Inspect and maintain all types and classes of meters, instruments, control equipment, regulating devices, and electrical equipment (e.g., electric motors, oil/air circuit breakers, generators, exciters, switchboards, rheostats, relays, voltage regulators, wiring, conduits, cables, lighting fixtures, fuses, transformers, lightning arrestors, busses, disconnecting switches, reactors, telephone equipment, electronic devices, storage batteries, motor-generators).
• Install and test meters, instruments, control equipment, regulating devices, and electrical equipment, including foundations and supports (e.g., control/protective apparatus, motors and controls, switchboard apparatus, signal/telephone systems, transformers, busses, disconnecting switches).
• Conduct and assist in routine and special tests on performance, capacity, and efficiency of steam boilers, steam turbine generators, pumps, heat exchange equipment, condensers, and other mechanical equipment in power plants, as well as on the accuracy of meters, instruments, and controls.
• Diagnose and correct faults in electrical apparatus (e.g., generators, motors, control/protective equipment, transformers, telephone systems, storage batteries, relays, meters, instruments).
• Diagnose troubles in important equipment and recommend corrective measures.
• Set up rigging for installation and maintenance of electrical equipment, foundations, and supports.
• Perform precision operations using hand, bench, and power tools.
• Work on energized circuits and perform related laboratory work for the test department.
• Layout work from prints or verbal instructions; prepare dimensional drawings, estimates, and bills of materials.
• Keep operating records and prepare maintenance and routine reports.
• Direct work of assistants and assist in general operation/maintenance during unusual or emergency periods.
• Perform necessary housekeeping duties.

Requirements

• Thorough knowledge of mechanical work as applied to meters, instruments, automatic controls, and regulating devices.
• Familiarity with advanced mechanical principles and proficiency in using tools/equipment ordinarily used in the field.
• Thorough knowledge of the operation, construction, and function of boilers, turbines, pumps, heaters, piping systems, meters, instruments, regulators, and control devices.
• Ability to apply the theory and chemistry of combustion and understand the elementary chemistry of feed water treatment.
• Working knowledge of electronics as applied in modern power station instruments and controls.
• Working knowledge of general mathematics, elementary thermodynamics, theory of fluid metering, and ASME power test codes.
• Ability to explain, adjust, or repair regulating devices in the power plant.
• Familiarity with the source, collection, calculation, and reporting of operating data on station log sheets and reports.
• Ability to compute bills of material for jobs from specifications or oral instructions.
• Thorough familiarity with the Company’s electrical and mechanical tagging rules.
• Ability to understand and perform semi-routine operations of high complexity and variety where standard methods are available.
• Knowledge of Company safety rules, approved resuscitation methods, and practical first aid.
• Ability to operate all firefighting equipment and know the appropriate equipment for electrical, oil, and other fires.

Qualifications

• IC&E Technician: Must have worked as a Maintenance Operator or equivalent experience in power plant operation/maintenance, with at least 3 years’ experience in power plant or related work.
• Journeyman Maintenance Operator: Must have at least 3 years’ experience as a maintenance operator or equivalent in power plant operation/maintenance.
• Maintenance Operator: No prior experience required.

Physical Qualifications

• Minimum age: 21 (IC&E Technician), 22 (Journeyman Maintenance Operator), or 18 (Maintenance Operator).
• Must have full use of mental and physical faculties, with strength and endurance for arduous labor.
