Maintenance Mechanic - Locksmith

Seattle Central College is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic - Locksmith to join the Facilities and Plant Operations Department. This full-time, on-site position reports to the Maintenance Supervisor and plays a key role in maintaining campus facilities, ensuring safety, functionality, and operational efficiency.

About the Role

This hands-on position performs journey-level maintenance and repair work across building systems, equipment, and facilities. A key focus is locksmithing, including the installation, repair, maintenance, and management of mechanical and electronic locking systems, digital access controls, door hardware, and key control programs. The role also involves troubleshooting complex issues, improving facility operations, and providing technical guidance on specialized maintenance projects.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the campus locksmith specialist by installing, repairing, re-keying, maintaining, and troubleshooting mechanical and electronic locking systems, digital access controls, door hardware, and keying infrastructure.
• Manage campus key control systems, including key issuance, tracking, recordkeeping, and secure access management.
• Inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot locking systems and access control equipment to support campus safety, security, and operational continuity.
• Perform journey-level maintenance, repair, installation, and modification work on campus buildings, facilities, equipment, and infrastructure.
• Install, maintain, and repair plumbing, electrical, mechanical, HVAC, and structural systems to ensure safe and reliable facility operations.
• Conduct preventive maintenance and diagnose complex issues affecting building systems, equipment, and campus infrastructure.
• Monitor and respond to building system, safety, fire protection, and environmental control issues, taking appropriate corrective and emergency action as needed.
• Support facility renovation, construction, and improvement projects through skilled trades work and technical expertise.
• Operate and maintain a variety of hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, and welding equipment; perform fabrication and custom repair work as required.
• Read and interpret blueprints, plans, specifications, and technical drawings to complete maintenance, repair, and construction projects.
• Develop cost estimates, evaluate repair options, and recommend practical solutions for maintenance, repair, and alteration projects.
• Provide technical leadership, guidance, and coordination to maintenance staff, ensuring quality workmanship, compliance with safety standards, and successful completion of assigned work.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Four or more years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work, or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic trade.
• Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required.
• Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, and motorized equipment.
• Physical ability to perform required work, including lifting at least 50 pounds, and regularly walking, bending, twisting, stooping, squatting, kneeling, climbing, reaching, grasping, pushing, and pulling.
• Work is performed throughout the campus in various weather conditions and may involve exposure to typical environmental noises.

Schedule

• Full-time position, 40 hours per week.
• Typically scheduled Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, with occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
• This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with representation by WFSE.
