Maintenance Mechanic (Facilities Maintenance Technician)

About the role

This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Enterprise Services (ES), Office of Facilities and Asset Management (OFAM), Operational Support Facilities Division (OSF), Border Patrol & Air and Marine (BPAM) Program Management Office (PMO). The hourly rate starts at $32.57 (WG-10, Step 1) to $42.34 (WG-10, Step 5).

Duties

• Perform facilities maintenance work involving two or more trade practices such as heating, cooling, electrical, plumbing, grounds maintenance, and repair of facilities including buildings, structures, grounds, and related fixtures and utilities.
• Coordinate, monitor, and perform installation and repair duties for the upkeep, operation, and utilization of the agency's facilities.
• Provide leadership with input and feedback for facility repair activities, including necessary reports, specifications, and documentation.
• Perform repairs in the following areas: Electrical, Air Conditioning, Painting, Plumbing, Carpentry.

Requirements

• Must be available to work overtime on a scheduled or unscheduled basis.

Physical Effort

• Work requires prolonged periods of walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
• Operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment.
• Lifts and carries heavy pieces of lumber or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

• Works inside and outside, subject to sudden temperature changes.
• Exposed to dirt, sewage, dust, grease, fumes, and steam.
• Subject to injury from use of hand and power tools, dust, dirt, burns, cuts, bruises, and electrical shock.
• May be required to wear protective clothing and equipment in accordance with health and safety regulations.

Qualifications

You qualify for the WG-10 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:

• Performing building maintenance, construction, and repair utilizing knowledge and application of trades such as electrical, plumbing, painting, carpentry, pipefitting, air-conditioning, and refrigeration.
• Ensuring continual, safe, and proper operation of all building systems, including upkeep of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities.
• Interpreting blueprints, electrical schematics, drawings, and specifications, and other technical guides.
• Working with test instruments, measuring devices, and hand and power tools.
• Utilizing shop mathematics such as measuring fittings and assessing the planning and layout of piping systems.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Competencies

• Knowledge of how to install and operate a wide range of complete electrical systems.
• Skill in the use of hand tools and power tools.
• Knowledge sufficient to repair and troubleshoot large, difficult AC systems.
• Skill in the use of accepted plumbing trade methods and techniques.
• Knowledge and ability in performing carpentry work on difficult or heavy items.

Background Investigation

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) requires all applicants to undergo a thorough background investigation to promote the agency's core values of vigilance, service to country, and integrity. During the screening process, you will be asked about felony criminal convictions, use of illegal drugs, and use of non-prescribed controlled substances.

Residency

There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by CBP. Individuals must have physically resided in the United States or its protectorates for at least three of the last five years. Exceptions may be granted for specific conditions such as working for the U.S. Government, participating in a study abroad program, or working as a contractor supporting the U.S. government.

Probationary Period

All employees new to the federal government must serve a one-year probationary period during the first year of their initial permanent federal appointment to determine fitness for continued employment. Current and former federal employees may also be required to serve or complete a probationary period.
