Maintenance Mechanic.

Responsibilities

  • Performs electrical troubleshooting and repairs, including replacing faulty wiring, switches, fixtures, and related components, and conducts basic installation and maintenance of electrical systems.
  • Locates, assesses, and repairs roof leaks; selects materials and installs or repairs shingles, flashing, gutters, sheathing, and roof structural components.
  • Constructs, installs, and repairs wood and composite structures such as framing, stairs, trim, cabinetry, partitions, and forms, using woodworking equipment and blueprints.
  • Installs, modifies, and repairs water, sewage, gas, oil, and fire-suppression systems by routing, fitting, connecting, and testing system components.
  • Performs general facility maintenance such as masonry, HVAC, refrigeration, welding, painting, and concrete work to ensure buildings and systems remain safe and functional.
  • Conducts motor-vehicle maintenance including replacing sensors, pumps, belts, hoses, brakes, filters, and complete engine assemblies; services cooling and air-conditioning systems and performs vehicle alignments.
  • Diagnoses and repairs heavy equipment and machinery; operates bulldozers, excavators, graders, loaders, tractors, and related attachments for earth-moving and land-management projects.
  • Installs and troubleshoots hardware and equipment technologies (e.g., GPS, telematics); applies pesticides; maintains equipment records; and trains or mentors staff and volunteers in safe and effective work practices.

Requirements

Conditions of employment:

  • Must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Direct Deposit participation required.
  • Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six months of appointment (subject to physical examination and drug and alcohol testing requirements).
  • May be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain certification on all equipment you operate.
  • Pre-employment and random drug testing are required; a verified positive drug test will disqualify appointment.
  • Required to wear a uniform and comply with uniform standards; a uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Firearm qualification and certification are required, with ongoing proficiency maintenance; must be free of any domestic violence convictions.
  • This position requires working with youth; Child Care National Agency Check and Inquiry (CNACI) is required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age or older.
  • Eligible for conversion to competitive service after two years upon meeting all requirements.
  • May be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.
  • May be required to travel overnight away from home up to four nights per month.
  • Must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Must serve a 2-year trial period during which fitness and continued employment will be evaluated.

Qualifications

  • Special knowledge or expertise concerning Alaska public lands natural and/or cultural resources and their management is required.
  • Local knowledge of the resources and typical conditions affecting the work must be demonstrated through lived or work experience in or near Alaska public lands.
  • Competencies for this position include:
    • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
    • Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
    • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprints.
    • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair.
    • Use of measuring instruments.
    • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
    • Knowledge of materials.
  • Volunteer experience (e.g., through National Service programs like Peace Corps or AmeriCorps) is credited as qualifying experience.
  • No substitution of education for the required special knowledge or expertise concerning natural and/or cultural resources management.

Physical Demands

  • Considerable physical effort is required in operating and maintaining facilities, equipment, and attachments.
  • Frequent work in small confined spaces, elevated areas, or over rough surfaces, requiring energy and awkward or strained positions.
  • Occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50-100 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures.
  • Frequent standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring or cramped positions.

Working Conditions

  • Work is accomplished both in an office setting (5%) and outdoors (95%).
  • Exposure to all weather conditions, running water, fumes, dust, grease, dirt, and hazards such as falls from ladders or scaffolding, electricity, and moving machinery parts.
  • Work environments include steep, uneven, rocky, and slippery terrain.
  • Exposure to energized circuits, electrical shock, burns, cuts, abrasions, and hazardous materials.
  • Regular use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as protective clothing, hardhats, hearing protection, safety glasses, goggles, gloves, steel-toe boots, respirators, and other items.
  • Risk of serious injury from operating equipment or collisions with automobiles when working on or near public roads.
