Main Functions

Purpose: The Maintenance Manager directs a team of maintenance employees in order to manage the building, grounds, production equipment, and plant facilities.

Essential Functions

  • Direct and prioritize the corrective maintenance (troubleshooting and repair of production equipment) to minimize downtime and maximize efficiency.
  • Facilitate preventative maintenance activities through a coordinated effort with plant management to minimize lost production time.
  • Cookout efforts to complete corrective maintenance and preventive maintenance activities on time, in full, and up to good resolution.
  • Use the approved software program for managing the department’s activities, such as, but not limited to, work orders, asset management, and inventory management.
  • Issue reports to follow up on corrective and preventive maintenance follow-up trends to ensure reoccurrence of corrective maintenance is avoided by revising and/or implementing preventive maintenance, as necessary.
  • Take corrective action on root cause of downtimes, as necessary and on a risk-based approach, in a timely manner and in accordance with company policy.
  • Implement continuous process and equipment improvements to affect quality, efficiency, and production costs.
  • Work in collaboration with the Plant Manager to develop, maintain, define frequency, and thoroughly follow up on key performance indicators (KPIs) on the Maintenance Department.
  • Ensure adherence to KPIs within department.
  • Work in collaboration with Plant Manager to establish maintenance department budget.
  • Responsible to meet the approved maintenance budget; report to Plant Manager on demand and as per defined frequency.
  • Facilitate the purchasing and inventory process for spare parts through the UNIX system and in accordance with company policies.
  • Contract, organize, and supervise the work of outside contractors and vendors, in accordance with supplier approval process and company policies.
  • Hire, train, develop, and evaluate maintenance department employees.
  • Act as a communications liaison for plant management and maintenance personnel.
  • Ensure compliance with current federal, state, and local labor regulations.
  • Comply with applicable environmental regulations and OSHA regulations.
  • Follow BMS-P-08-02-A01 GMPs and applicable BMS/DC and SITES Procedures and Instructions at all times to ensure product food safety, legality, and quality.
  • Ensure that all direct reports comply at all times, considering Food Safety and Health & Safety Standards in all decisions and operations to maintain full compliance.
  • Comply to and participate in food safety, quality, continuous improvement programs, and environmental programs, including but not limited to GMP, HACCP, BRCGs, ISO and ESG.
  • Serves as backup for the Maintenance Supervisor when necessary.
  • Provides hands-on maintenance services when necessary.

Technical skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in plant engineering, or factory/plant maintenance, or equivalent knowledge through work experience.
  • A minimum of five years in the maintenance field of a manufacturing facility, three of which were in a supervisory role directing a multi-functional maintenance staff.
  • Must be within a fast-paced, production-driven environment, ideally with foods or other biological products of limited shelf-life.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, and a working knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated trouble shooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Knowledge of local building codes, OSHA regulations, and food safety regulations.
  • Working knowledge of GMP, HACCP, Health and Safety and ISO programs, along with basic understanding of pumps, conveyors, valves, PLC’s and variable frequency drives.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail; logical and methodical approach to problem solving.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

  • Ability to develop and maintain productive and positive relationships with federal/state/local agencies, vendors, contractors, customers and employees.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from internal/external customers.
  • Ability to successfully negotiate contractual agreements by reading, analyzing and interpreting complex documents.
  • Strong organizational skills for the performance of a variety of complex administrative duties.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision and management.
  • A demonstrated ability to lead people and get results through others.
