Maintenance Laborer

About the role

This position is primarily responsible for the maintenance, servicing, and inspection of all facility equipment and general facility maintenance. Additional responsibilities may include highly skilled maintenance tasks such as electrical work, fabrication, welding, cutting, blueprint reading, and carpentry.

Responsibilities

• Fully participate in the company Safety Program and attend daily pre-shift meetings.
• Perform all duties in compliance with OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations (ISO where applicable), including wearing appropriate PPE.
• Conduct daily walk-throughs of the facility and equipment, plan and prioritize the day based on facility needs and supervisor input.
• Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance per manufacturer’s recommendations and company policies to maximize equipment life and reduce downtime.
• Troubleshoot reported or discovered equipment issues; repair or replace defective parts or request assistance as needed.
• Maintain needed inventory to complete routine tasks and maintenance.
• Complete documentation timely, accurately, and legibly.
• Perform general housekeeping and clean-up of all work areas.
• Utilize understanding of industry standards and research information to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including highly skilled maintenance tasks (e.g., electrical, fabrication, welding, cutting, blueprint reading, carpentry).

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent experience.
• Preferred: 1 year of experience working in an industrial environment with a dependable work record.
• Preferred: Knowledge of or experience with hay press and cubing equipment.
• Preferred: Mechanical Maintenance Certificate.

Skills

• Intermediate to advanced understanding of mechanical maintenance, including knowledge of machines and tools, their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
• Basic computer skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
• Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with the ability to interact with all levels of people within and outside the organization.
• Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
• Ability to accept and follow directions.
• Ability to apply common sense and logical thought processes to interpret communications and recommend solutions to mechanical problems.
• Ability to work well both independently and within a team environment.

Physical Demands & Requirements

• Ability to lift, push, or pull 50 lbs. occasionally to continuously depending on daily needs.
• Ability to meet requirements of and utilize all applicable PPE.
• Ability to meet requirements of PFT and fit testing, where applicable.
• Ability to open silo bin doors and rail car hoppers (Convent, LA location only).
• Ability to pass all required testing under FRA and DOT for this position (where applicable).
• Ability to perform work in confined spaces.
• Ability to safely walk on barge surfaces and work around deep/swift water.
• Ability to stand and walk constantly/continuously.
• Ability to understand and communicate verbally, in person, and over two-way radio (and recognize emergency alarms).
• Ability to understand and communicate written instructions.
• Ability to walk safely on top of railcars, open gates, operate vibrators, etc., where applicable.
• Ability to work extended hours, weekends, holidays, and/or alternate shifts as needed.
• Ability to work in environments with high dust levels around grain and other bulk products (where applicable).
• Ability to work outside in extreme weather conditions.
• Acutely aware of surroundings with the ability to quickly adjust to signals or changes in the environment.
• Arm/hand steadiness and multi-limb coordination.
• Manual dexterity, e.g., ability to grasp, manipulate, and assemble small objects.
• Uses near, far, and peripheral vision and depth perception for tasks being performed; may need to identify problems with grain.

Environmental Conditions

The work environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Frequently required to use personal protective equipment. Travel may be required (5%-20%), including off-site training and/or work at alternate locations.

Pay

The expected base pay range for this role is $22.00 - $25.00 per hour. Actual pay offered may vary depending on work location, job-related knowledge, skills, and relevant experience.
