Maintenance Engineer

About the role

The Maintenance Engineer provides mechanical technical support for maintenance and reliability activities, develops design concepts, and manages maintenance-focused initiatives. They are responsible for near-term and long-term maintenance support on fixed equipment, rotating equipment, instrumentation & electrical (I&E), and piping systems. The role includes developing and leading maintenance projects and initiatives to ensure the reliability, safety, and efficiency of industrial machinery, facilities, and systems through preventive maintenance plans, routine inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs. The Maintenance Engineer also ensures compliance with safety regulations to minimize operational downtime.

Responsibilities

• Supports day-to-day performance of equipment to ensure safe operations and compliance with regulatory, commercial, and logistical requirements.
• Diagnoses, repairs, and supports testing of mechanical, electrical, rotating equipment, and hydraulic issues.
• Leads mechanical field changes through the Management of Change (MOC) process for capital and maintenance projects.
• Provides engineering support for equipment and piping changes.
• Improves fixed and rotating equipment asset availability, criticality assessment, preventive maintenance development, and utilization.
• Identifies opportunities for improvement, both proactively and reactively.
• Inspects field equipment installations according to design and fabricator specifications during unit outages and upgrades.
• Works with process engineering, maintenance, and operations personnel to troubleshoot failures and provide feedback on Root Cause Analysis (RCA) reports.
• Collaborates with vendors, licensors, and contractors to support debottlenecking, optimization, and troubleshooting to maintain safe and reliable operations.
• Provides support during unit commissioning, startups, and shutdowns.
• Engages daily with maintenance supervisors, the reliability team, and maintenance and operations staff.
• Provides after-hours support as needed, including emergency call-outs.
• Helps develop justification and work scope for Turnaround (T/A) and maintenance projects.
• Supports T/A with potential extended work schedules and/or night shifts as appropriate.
• Leads and manages small to medium reliability initiatives.
• Leads and participates in the MOC process and participates in hazard reviews (What-Ifs, HAZOPs) and troubleshooting.
• Leads and/or supports investigations for mechanical-related near misses and incidents.
• Maintains current work lists with priorities.

Education and Experience

• BS in Mechanical Engineering.
• A minimum of 3 years of mechanical engineering operations support experience in petrochemical, refining, and/or renewable fuels processing.
• Experience with industry-standard project management practices.

Physical Requirements

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

• Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
• Ability to perform repetitive movements over long periods of time.
• Ability to work in confined spaces and wear self-contained breathing apparatus.
• Ability to climb ladders and/or stairs on tanks, vessels, and structures; wear a respirator; work around equipment containing high pressures and temperatures and various chemicals.
