Maintenance Custodian (Briarwood Family Residence)

About the role

The Maintenance Custodian, under the direction of the Director of Maintenance for Shelters and onsite supervision by the Maintenance Supervisor, is assigned to complete building maintenance projects at all family shelters. The role involves rotating among shelters to address building repairs and special project needs, including painting, electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, and landscaping. The Maintenance Custodian may also assist with cleaning vacant units, public areas, and workspaces to maintain regulatory compliance and facility standards.

Responsibilities

• Report directly to the Maintenance Supervisor regarding building maintenance, repairs, and special project needs.
• Immediately report any major building repairs, hazards, defects, or supply needs to the Superintendent.
• Complete assigned work orders promptly and rotate among shelters as needed for repairs (e.g., painting, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, landscaping).
• Maintain proper care of tools, supplies, and equipment used in the performance of duties.
• Assist with ground cleanup and snow removal as assigned.
• Maintain a safe and sanitary workspace, adhering to all OSHA regulations.
• Drive agency vehicles as needed and accurately track mileage in the van logbook.
• Clean and sanitize vacant units within the DHS regulatory timeline of 4 hours post-discharge.
• Clean public areas and workspaces, empty trash from compactors, and maintain floors (strip, wax, buff, mop, vacuum) as assigned.
• Assist in moving furniture and client belongings into and out of units as needed.
• Work weekends as required by the schedule.
• Assume the same position at other Salvation Army shelters or take on additional tasks at the discretion of the Director of Shelters or Salvation Army Department Heads.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Experience working with a disadvantaged population is a plus.
• Ability to lift at least fifty pounds and work an eight-hour shift primarily standing and moving.
• Ability to follow instructions and complete assigned tasks; familiarity with basic cleaning equipment.
• Demonstrated knowledge in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting, with technical knowledge of mechanical systems in a physical plant.
• Valid NYS Driver’s License required.
• Willingness to become certified as a Fire Safety Coordinator is strongly desired.

Schedule

The Maintenance Custodian’s schedule may include working on weekends.
