Maintenance Custodian (Briarwood Family Residence)

About the role

Under the direction of the Director of Maintenance for Shelters and onsite supervision by the Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Custodian is assigned to complete building maintenance projects at all family shelters. The role involves rotating among shelters to address building repairs and needs, including painting, electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, and landscaping.

Responsibilities

• Complete building maintenance projects and special project needs at family shelters.
• Assist in completing work orders and addressing major building repairs, hazards, or defects.
• Ensure proper care and maintenance of tools, supplies, and equipment.
• Assist with ground cleanup and snow removal as assigned.
• Maintain a safe and sanitary workspace in compliance with OSHA regulations.
• Drive agency vehicles as needed and accurately track mileage.
• Clean and sanitize vacant units within the DHS regulatory timeline of 4 hours post-discharge.
• Clean public areas and workspaces, empty trash from compactors, and maintain floors (strip, wax, buff, mop, or vacuum).
• Assist in moving furniture and belongings of clients into and out of units.
• Perform other assignments or tasks as directed by the Director of Shelters or Salvation Army Department Heads.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Demonstrated technical ability in painting, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing, with knowledge of mechanical systems in facilities.
• Ability to lift at least fifty pounds and work an eight-hour shift primarily standing and moving.
• Ability to follow instructions and complete assigned tasks.
• Familiarity with basic cleaning equipment.
• Valid NYS Driver’s License required.
• Willingness to become certified as a Fire Safety Coordinator is strongly desired.
• Experience working with a disadvantaged population is a plus.

Schedule

The schedule may include working on weekends. Employees may be asked to assume the same position at another shelter operated by the Salvation Army at the discretion of leadership.
