About the role
The Maintenance Custodian 1 performs all custodial duties required to provide clean and sanitary spaces across the UW campus, serving students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This is a full-time position reporting to the Custodial Manager.
Responsibilities
- Clean and maintain floors, walls, windows, carpets, furniture, and chalkboards.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, shower rooms, and fixtures; empty trash containers.
- Set up and move furniture for special events.
- Use power equipment and hand tools such as brooms, mops, squeegees, buffers, polishers, and vacuums for cleaning and maintenance.
- Use ladders as required for work assignments.
- Replace light bulbs, tissue, restroom supplies, light switches, and rewire lamps.
- Lock and unlock buildings; secure facilities by checking for unlocked doors and windows; report unauthorized occupants.
- Construct simple items such as door stops and bookshelves; make routine repairs to locks, floors, walls, and ceilings.
- Perform touch-up painting of surfaces.
- Under direct supervision, perform minor repairs on electrical circuits, plumbing fixtures, lights, and partitions; clean clogged drains.
- Manually or with self-propelled equipment, remove snow or debris from sidewalks, stairs, driveways, and entryways; help maintain campus grounds.
- Operate motorized equipment as needed.
- Set up and take down equipment such as chalkboards, easels, folding chairs, and tables for meetings, classrooms, conferences, and events.
- Strip, clean, buff, and apply finish to floors; use high-speed floor buffers and polishers; vacuum and clean carpets.
- Follow written and/or verbal instructions regarding the use of chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures.
- Report need for repair and/or maintenance.
- Wash interior or easily accessible exterior windows.
- Move furniture, equipment, supplies, and tools on an incidental basis.
- Operate high-pressure washers.
- Perform related duties as required, including working during declared suspended operations.
Requirements
- Physical ability to perform required work.
- One year of experience in custodial or general maintenance work.
- Regular and predictable attendance.
- Ability to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of chemicals, supplies, and equipment; compliance with safety policies and procedures.
- Possession of a valid Washington State Driver’s License (or a license recognized as valid by the State of Washington) and two years of driving experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Basic computer skills.
Working Conditions
- Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment.
Pay
Annual pay range: $45,144.00 – $53,148.00.
Schedule
Monday through Friday, 5:00 am – 1:30 pm.
