About the role

This is corrections security and maintenance work associated with the daily maintenance, prevention, and repair of buildings within the Department of Corrections. The role supports the daily maintenance and general plant operations of the Lehigh County Department of Corrections, focusing on technical and complex tasks in building maintenance, heating, plumbing, and utility plant operations at a large correctional institution exceeding 1,000 beds.

This position reports to the Maintenance Sergeant and Lieutenant and assists supervisors in the upkeep and preservation of building systems.

Responsibilities

  • Receive direction on facility projects and respond to work orders for repairs.
  • Maintain support of the daily physical plant operation of the facility.
  • Enforce policy and procedure consistently.
  • Respond to building maintenance emergencies and participate in emergency plan implementation.
  • Resolve maintenance issues in the facility and address problems before escalation.
  • Support repairs by coordinating with outside service personnel and service contracts.
  • Ensure maintenance tools and supplies are properly inventoried, logged, stored, controlled, and issued.
  • Coordinate with other facility departments to solve problems.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and function of all areas of the institution.
  • Respond to Level 2 emergencies in the facility.
  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with inmates, staff, volunteers, and visitors.

Requirements

  • Diversified mechanic experience in building maintenance, with working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, welding, painting, and HVAC systems.
  • Ability to learn and understand rules and regulations relating to the operation of a correctional facility.
  • Ability to quickly learn methods and techniques for the control and custody of inmates, including appropriate use of force and defensive tactics.
  • Ability to supervise the activities of inmates in custody.
  • Ability to remain alert and react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, keep records, and write clear and concise reports.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Second shift availability.

A criminal background check is required. This position is part of a bargaining unit.
