Maintenance Construction Operator - Dothan Utilities

Salary: $17.89 - $28.59 hourly

About the role

This position participates in the maintenance and construction of the city's wastewater collection and/or water distribution system.

Requirements

• Graduation from a standard senior-high school or GED equivalent, as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
• Six months recent experience in the installation, repair, and inspection of utility work, including water or sanitary sewer systems or plumbing, specifically the installation, repair, and inspection of pipes associated with water/sewer systems (preferred).
• Certificate of satisfactory completion/graduation from a Vocational High School Program; a Diploma/Certificate of Completion from an accredited Technical College in welding, plumbing, pump maintenance, mechanics, electric, or a closely related field; or military training in the above fields (preferred).
• Valid operator’s driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
• Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) within 120 days of employment.
• Must be able to report to the regular workstation within 30 minutes in emergency or standby situations (requirement must be met within six months of employment).
• Must be available for contact via phone within 30 days of employment due to call-out requirements.
• Must meet the City of Dothan’s employment physical standards, including drug/alcohol testing.

Conditions of Employment

• Must complete and accept Certification of Understanding and CDL Condition of Employment forms.
• Subject to background investigations, including criminal, credit, past employment, and reference checks.
• Required to submit to drug and alcohol testing, including pre-employment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position.

Application & Examination

• Qualified applicants will be evaluated on training and experience (50% of final grade) and a Physical Ability/Agility test (50% of final grade).
• Physical Ability/Agility testing is scheduled for August 24, 2026. Applicants will receive an email to self-schedule their test slot.
• Applicants on vacation or federally protected leave (e.g., FMLA, USERRA) must notify the Personnel Department in writing by the closing date if unable to attend.
