Maintenance Associate

About the role

Temple Beth Zion (TBZ), a vibrant and historic Reform Jewish community, is seeking a part-time Maintenance Associate to support the cleanliness, safety, and day-to-day functioning of its two campuses. This role is essential to ensuring that TBZ remains a welcoming, well-maintained environment for congregants, visitors, and tenants, including the Jewish Museum of Buffalo and Jewish Family Services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily cleaning tasks including dusting, vacuuming, mopping, washing surfaces, and using commercial cleaning products safely and effectively.
  • Maintain outdoor areas seasonally, including sweeping, weeding, watering, snow removal, and salting walkways.
  • Follow daily, weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance checklists; complete signoffs to ensure consistency and accountability.
  • Set up and break down rooms for events, including moving tables, chairs, and equipment according to instructions.
  • Maintain organized supply closets and storage areas; track inventory and receive deliveries.
  • Complete minor repairs (e.g., light bulbs, basic plumbing or electrical fixes) and report larger issues to the Maintenance Supervisor or Operations Manager.
  • Support security protocols in coordination with police, security personnel, and TBZ leadership.
  • Interact professionally with congregants, visitors, and tenants; provide helpful assistance and escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Take photos of events when requested and share them with the Operations Manager and Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Follow all health and safety guidelines; complete incident or accident reports as needed.
  • Attend maintenance meetings, “hot meetings,” and staff meetings as requested.

Qualifications

  • Experience in maintenance, custodial services, or facilities support.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb stairs, bend, walk extensively, and perform physical tasks safely.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English; basic proficiency with MS Word and Outlook.
  • Strong self-direction and ability to work independently without constant supervision.
  • Professional, polite, and helpful demeanor in all interactions.
  • Reliable transportation to TBZ locations (805 Delaware Ave. and 700 Sweet Home Road).
  • Comfort working in a Jewish communal environment; willingness to learn about the rhythms of the Jewish calendar.
