Maintenance Assistant (Plumber & Steamfitter)

About the role

A Maintenance Assistant (Plumber) performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance, repair and related activities as assigned in the Plumbing Department. The initial work assignment for this position will consist of routine repair and/or modification of facilities typically associated with the plumbing trade. Typical assignments include working from plans, diagrams, oral and written instructions, to perform routine maintenance, repair, and installation in the plumbing trade under the direct or indirect supervision of a journeyman plumber.

Responsibilities

• Assisting plumber in layout of sprinkler systems
• Performing maintenance on PRVs
• Unplugging sewer lines
• Installing plumbing fixtures
• Isolating and repairing water line breaks
• Installing copper, plastic, galvanized, cast iron, black iron, glass and stainless steel pipe and fittings
• Perform maintenance on gym equipment
• Assist in pool maintenance
• Aid in maintenance and installation of kitchen equipment
• Use hand and portable power tools, shop equipment and measuring and testing instruments appropriate to the plumbing trade
• Develop computer skills to operate the Department's facilities management system (Maximo), KRONOS time management system, and purchasing system as implemented in their area and on their level
• Occasionally operate trucks and light construction equipment

Qualifications

• Two years of full-time experience of plumbing work under the supervision of a skilled plumber and steamfitter, OR completion of an appropriate two-year technical school
• Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the plumbing trade
• Ability to use the tools, machines, equipment, and material of the plumbing trade
• Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to operate a motor vehicle in New York State
• Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor
• Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instruction
• Ability to supervise the activities of a subordinate staff
• Ability to climb ladders and work at heights on scaffolds and platforms
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans

Schedule

Initial assignment will be in the Plumbing Shop on the 7:00 am to 3:30 pm shift, Monday through Friday with Saturday and Sunday as pass days. Since the nature of the campus requires continuous service and emergencies may arise during other than normal work hours, employee in this position will be required to provide a home telephone number and be willing to accept emergency call-ins and overtime work when necessary.

The successful candidate for this position will be deemed as a university essential employee. The successful candidate for this position must be able to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position satisfactorily.
