About the role
This position involves operating equipment to maintain and rehabilitate infrastructure within the Catskill Forest Preserve, including trail systems, access points, public fishing rights areas, and ADA-compliant infrastructure. Work locations are often remote, requiring traversal of steep and uneven terrain while carrying tools and equipment.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain trail systems, access points, and public fishing rights areas.
- Construct and maintain ADA-compliant infrastructure.
- Perform routine maintenance, installation, and repair tasks in mechanical, building construction, motor equipment, and electrical trades.
- Operate heavy equipment such as trucks, tractors, and front-end loaders.
- Operate light self-propelled equipment including power mowers, chain saws, and power saws.
- Use power and manual hand tools such as saws, hammers, drills, and sanders.
- Perform construction trades including masonry, carpentry, and electrical work.
- Work in remote areas, adverse weather conditions, and difficult terrain.
- Lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
Requirements
- Two years of experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled trades-worker or completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course.
- Valid driver’s license or ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
- Ability to use personal protection equipment, including a respirator.
- Capability to negotiate difficult terrain and work in remote areas.
Additional Information
This is an hourly appointment currently funded through March 31, 2026, with a likelihood of continuation beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine the actual termination date.
