About the Role
This position is an integral part of the ministry at Saint William Catholic Church, supporting the Pastor and upholding the mission of the parish. The role involves maintaining the campus, performing custodial and maintenance duties, and assisting with parish events to foster a welcoming environment for visitors, parishioners, and staff.
Responsibilities
- Support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic ministry and the mission of the parish in both professional and personal life.
- Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
- Maintain campus custodial operations, ensuring high safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds.
- Perform routine maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, cleaning ceiling diffusers and grilles, changing air filters, painting, drywall repairs, carpet cleaning, floor refinishing, landscaping, and sprinkler system maintenance.
- Perform specialized custodial care of buildings and grounds, including unlocking/opening and locking/closing buildings.
- Handle day-to-day physical operations of the Church facilities, including setting up tables, chairs, AV equipment, garbage bins, preparing beverages, inventory control of maintenance supplies, and creating a welcoming atmosphere.
- Support the Pastor, clergy, staff, and parishioners by professionally responding to their needs, often taking direction from multiple sources and working independently.
- Maintain a professional appearance and attitude, providing a courteous and welcoming environment.
- Complete work orders and support all aspects of events and campus cleanliness.
- Demonstrate a servant leadership work ethic and teamwork attitude, filling in wherever needed.
- Perform basic audio and video equipment functions.
- Set up and tear down classrooms and meeting spaces, including tables, chairs, and peripherals.
- Assist in the setup, teardown, and cleaning of all parish events.
- Move furniture and equipment as directed by the Director of Facilities or supervisor.
- Maintain the neatness and cleanliness of grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, sports facilities, and general landscaping.
- Follow work orders and supervisor direction.
- Assist the Director of Facilities and supervisors with any other necessary jobs and duties as assigned.
- Work weekends, holidays (especially Christmas and Holy Week), and different shifts as needed.
- Dedicate 30 minutes daily to prayer time.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 3 years of building maintenance and/or custodian experience.
- Bilingual preferred.
- Must be Catholic and willing to support the teachings and mission of the Roman Catholic Church.
- Must be certified in Diocese of Austin EIM (Ethics and Integrity in Ministry) within 60 days of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.
Skills
- Knowledge of the structure and basic teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
- Knowledge of general cleaning practices, including the safe use of household-type chemicals and equipment.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service and work effectively with staff, clergy, and laity.
- Ability to read labels, use cleaning chemicals safely, follow safety protocols, wear safety gear, and use appropriate tools for each task.
- Basic understanding of email and mobile apps (e.g., e-space, Openpath, Entouch).
- Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Ability to work independently at a fast pace, pay attention to detail, and perform repetitive tasks.
- Ability to lift and carry at least 40 pounds.
- Proficiency in English communication.
Working Conditions
- Engaged in ministry and closely tied to the Pastor in the exercise of his ministry and obligations to the Church.
- Employment is at-will.
- All buildings and vehicles owned by Saint William are tobacco-free.
- Fast-paced environment with priorities and plans that may change rapidly.
- Weekend, evening, and holiday work may be required.
- Exposure to religious ceremonies, conduct, and speech, including Catholic Christian prayer and liturgical celebrations.
- Adherence to dress codes and conduct standards, including EIM standards of conduct in and outside the workplace.
- May be required to use a personal vehicle to drive to other parishes or off-site locations.
- Travel within and outside the parish to meetings and other events may be required.
- Personal and professional activities must conform to and support the mission, purpose, and moral teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
