Summary

The Magistrate Judge presides over criminal and civil cases in accordance with jurisdiction granted by Georgia law.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Presides over first appearance hearings, commitment hearings, and misdemeanor cases within the jurisdiction of Magistrate Court.
• Considers warrant applications, issues arrest and search warrants, and conducts pre-warrant hearings.
• Serve as the on-call Judge to execute arrest warrants and search warrants and conducts first appearance hearings on the weekends and holidays, after normal business hours.
• Perform wedding ceremonies.

Education, Training and Experience

• The Magistrate Judge should possess at a minimum, a law degree; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
• NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Possession of a valid Georgia Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
  • Must have attained age 25.
  • Must be a resident of Macon-Bibb County for at least two (2) years.

• The Magistrate Judge must be knowledgeable of the following principles, procedures, and concepts:
• Knowledge of the laws and procedures governing the functions of the Magistrate Court.
• Skill in effective oral and written communication.
• Ability to show good judgement, consistency, timeliness, and respect in decision-making.
