Machinist millwright

About the Role

Performs tasks and provides services to support the plant’s production goals, overall business plans and objectives as directed. This is a manual machinist role, not CNC.

Responsibilities

• Complies with established job safety practices, policies and procedures.
• Supports and follows the guidelines of the food safety system.
• Receives verbal instructions, blueprints and work orders; makes drawings or sketches of parts to be made or repaired.
• Interprets drawings, calculates and determines indices, tapers and other dimensions for part(s).
• Performs layout work as required.
• Receives tools and paperwork; establishes and maintains logbooks.
• Selects and grinds tools, adjusting tools, speeds and feed rates for efficient machining.
• Machines parts to precision requirements of tolerance and finish.
• Sets up and operates machine tools, lathes, grinders, mills, and hones.
• Performs dismantling, fitting or assembly work required for maintenance or production equipment.
• Repairs and maintains all assigned machines and equipment.
• Accesses, inputs, and retrieves information from the computer.
• Performs clean-up, painting, and housekeeping duties.
• Communicates pertinent information to next shift.
• Assists in inspection of tooling and operates most inspection equipment.
• May troubleshoot equipment at customer sites.
• Initiates, reviews, and follows all standard operating procedures (SOPs) for area of responsibility.
• Establishes and maintains effective work relationships within the department, division, group, and company.
• Understands and responds to emergency coordinator (EC) directions during emergencies.
• Implements contingency plans as required by the position.
• Completes and maintains environmental documentation (inspections, labeling, record keeping, maintenance of equipment).
• Reports status of assigned responsibilities to EC, EFP, or EM.
• Recognizes waste streams and minimizes waste generation through prudent use of materials and proper disposal.
• Understands and practices proper accumulation and storage requirements for wastes.
• Complies with environmental regulations when using, dispensing, or handling hazardous and non-hazardous materials and wastes.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum 5 years of job-related experience.
• Working knowledge of standard machine shop and tool and die practices, metallurgy, heat treatment, welding, and brazing.
• Ability to apply independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation of standard machining techniques and procedures.
• Ability to handle sensitive and proprietary information confidentially.
• Thorough understanding of operating principles of assigned equipment.
• Skill in operating grinders, lathes, drill presses, and other machine shop equipment to tolerances of up to ± .000050.
• Ability to read blueprints and perform tool and die work.
• Proficiency in basic math, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
• Ability to describe the sequence of operations to complete a job.
• Regular and predictable attendance between assigned start and end times.
• Ability to work independently within parameters set by management.
• Effective communication skills, including reading, writing, and following complex instructions.

Work Environment

• Works in a manufacturing environment with exposure to occupational hazards, including high noise levels, physical obstacles, and chemicals.
• Required to wear appropriate safety gear (glasses, hearing protection, clothing, footwear) and follow safety practices.
• Works in confined areas and climbs to high, narrow places for rigging, hoists, scaffolds, and other tasks.
• Exposure to torch flames, arc welding, or other systems requiring protective shields, masks, or clothing.
• Assigned schedule or 12-hour shifts, rotating days and nights, Monday through Sunday; hours may vary.
• Regular overtime and/or on-call availability as directed by management.

Preferred Experience

• Troubleshooting and repairing hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
• Welding and fabrication of custom parts and equipment modifications.
• Experience in a custom job shop environment.
• Supporting multiple equipment types in a manufacturing or industrial maintenance setting.

Pay

Expected hourly pay: $42.31. This role is eligible to participate in the annual incentive compensation plan.

Schedule

Onsite role requiring regular in-person engagement. Assigned schedule or 12-hour shifts, rotating days and nights, Monday through Sunday. Local commute between Ball locations and other sites may be required.
