Machinist III
Amentum is NASA’s largest engineering solutions provider, working with NASA at centers across the United States. We are seeking a Machinist III to join our team under the JETS II CBA agreement.
Responsibilities
- Plan, layout, machine, and assemble parts and tools to precision tolerances, meeting exacting standards and specifications for mechanical or specialty apparatus.
- Set and operate a variety of machining equipment, including engine and bench lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, job borers, grinders, hones, gear cutters, and drill presses.
- Determine the sequence of machining operations, number of cuts, cutting tools, and methods for holding and aligning work.
- Perform complete layouts on parts involving compound angles and exacting mating part work to check for sufficient stock and reference during machining.
- Set up machines independently to perform any operations within their capacity, including selecting, mounting, and aligning specialized machine attachments and tooling.
- Determine, set, and adjust machine speeds, feeds, and depth of cut; select, mount, and fasten cutting tools for optimal performance.
- Check machine setups and parts for conformance to blueprint specifications; grind own tool bits and drills.
- Work from detailed drawings, templates, sketches, assembly blueprints, or oral instructions.
- Provide technical direction to customers on pre-fabrication reviews, modifications, or repairs.
- Operate machines to perform operations such as chasing tapers, turning, boring, reaming, facing, and slotting for precise machine fits.
- Machine parts involving compound angles or coordinated concave/convex surfaces to exacting tolerances.
- Program and operate machines using at least one CNC language.
- Train less experienced machinists and perform general inspection of work.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area; organize and store inventory, materials, and safety equipment.
- Use lift equipment as required; perform related duties as assigned.
