Responsibilities
- Calculate dimensions or tolerances of workpieces, products, or equipment by using instruments such as micrometers or Vernier calipers.
- Measure dimensions of completed products or workpieces to verify conformance to specifications.
- Machine parts to specifications, using machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, cutting equipment, or grinders.
- Set up, adjust, or operate basic or specialized machine tools used to perform precision machining operations.
- Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, or materials onto machines.
- Mount attachments or tools onto production equipment.
- Measure, examine, or test completed units to check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments, such as micrometers.
- Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
- Maintain equipment operation and machine tools to ensure proper functioning and operational conditions. Including but not limited to lubrication, replacement of parts, testing operation, disassembling and re-assembling equipment for maintenance or repair.
- Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, or engineering information to determine methods or sequences of operations needed to fabricate products.
- Operate equipment to verify operational efficiency.
- Program computers or electronic instruments, such as numerically controlled machine tools.
- Diagnose machine tool and equipment malfunctions to determine the need for adjustments or repairs.
- Measure materials to mark reference points, cutting lines, or other indicators.
- Fit and assemble parts to make or repair assembly tools.
- Confer with numerical control programmers to check and ensure that new programs or machinery will function properly, and that output will meet specifications.
- Separate scrap waste and related materials for reuse, recycling, or disposal.
- Evaluate machining procedures and recommend changes or modifications for improved efficiency or adaptability.
Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent working experience.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of related experience.
- Minimum of one (1) year of training involving both on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers.
- A recognized apprenticeship program may be associated with these occupations.
- Training in vocational schools, related on-the-job experience, or an associate degree is preferred.
- Licenses or certificates that apply to any training or skill trades classes (GD&T/CMM Training, etc.).
- Hands-on experience with different manual, semi-automated or automated tools and machines (lathes, grinders, etc.).
- In-depth knowledge of the properties of metal and other materials.
- Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and manuals.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills with robust attention to detail.
