About the role

HX5 is currently seeking a Machine-Tool Operator (Tool Room) to work onsite in a laboratory environment at Marshall Space Flight Center. This role involves setting up and operating machine tools and using hand tools to make or repair (shape, fit, finish, assemble) metal parts, tools, gauges, models, patterns, mechanisms, and machines.

Responsibilities

• Operate one or more types of machine tools (e.g., jig borer, grinding machine, engine lathe, milling machine) to machine metal for jigs, fixtures, cutting tools, gauges, or metal dies/molds used in shaping or forming metal or nonmetallic materials (e.g., plastic, plaster, rubber, glass).
• Plan and perform difficult machining operations requiring complicated setups or a high degree of accuracy.
• Set up machine tools (e.g., install cutting tools, adjust guides, stops, working tables, and controls to handle stock size).
• Determine proper feeds, speeds, tooling, and operation sequence or follow those prescribed in drawings, blueprints, or layouts.
• Use precision measuring instruments and make adjustments during machining to achieve close tolerances.
• Select proper coolants and cutting/lubricating oils, recognize when tools need dressing, and dress tools as required.

Requirements

• Extensive knowledge of machine shop and tool room practices, typically acquired through considerable on-the-job training and experience.
• Proof of U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Residency.
• Ability to complete a U.S. government background investigation and obtain/maintain NASA Public Trust background screening requirements.
• Must pass a MSFC physical examination for safety-related certifications and annual NASA medical screenings.
• Ability to operate various machines, lift, bend, or crouch occasionally (with or without reasonable accommodation).
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team and communicate clearly.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Work Environment

• Machine Shop, Laboratory, test environments, test stands, and possible confined spaces.
