Machine Operator (2nd Shift)

About the role

We are seeking a full-time SMT Operator (2nd Shift) in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will assemble surface mount technology (SMT) electronic sub-assemblies using robotic machines.

Responsibilities

• Learn and apply basic skills for becoming a certified SMT Operator by completing written training objectives and demonstrating proficiency
• Attend to machines by quickly and efficiently loading/replenishing feeders with reels of components, entering programs into automated placement machinery, setting up support fixtures, and prepping multiple assembly lines for the next shop order to maximize machine productive time
• Read shop orders, follow production work instructions and sample assemblies, and receive verbal/written instructions regarding duties to be performed
• Provide daily status and process communications via e-mail to SMT Machine Operators on other shifts, Production Management, and Process Engineering
• Position, align, and hand-place components in specified relationship to each other in jig, fixture, or conveyance during sequential assembly of printed circuit boards
• Collect quality data essential for continuous improvement and tracking of factory deliverables
• Perform operator-level preventive maintenance on machines per Garmin requirements
• Troubleshoot component placement and machine issues commensurate with your level of expertise, training, and latitude provided by Process Engineering
• Mount components such as transformers, resistors, capacitors, integrated circuits, and sockets on chassis, panel, or printed circuit board
• Notify management of any conditions felt as being undesirable or nonconforming to product specification and any procedures that cannot be performed as documented
• Collect scrap information from machinery and investigate root cause for excessive scrap
• Maintain component reels in stocking locations as required, promptly returning after use while observing proper ESD and contamination prevention handling practices
• Observe safe production practices by only operating machines with all safety doors closed and with all safety guards in place
• Comply with Garmin’s Attendance Policy (HRD-003) and Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements
• Must be able to lift and/or move 30 pounds
• Wear Garmin-provided personal protective equipment, including SD shoes (Static Dissipative Footwear), for the entire shift to minimize electrostatic discharge (ESD) risks
• Effectively participate in team meetings to discuss productivity, efficiency, quality, and other topics related to successful manufacturing practices
• Adapt to changing priorities and react/recover responsibly
• Maintain acceptable organization and cleanliness in work area
• Identify all material properly and maintain orderly work center conditions with proper housekeeping and effective shift turnover

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED
• Previous machine operation experience or related production/equipment control experience
• Demonstrated verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills for respectful work-related communications with peers and associates from other departments
• Ability to routinely read numbers and differentiate between similar numbers in Garmin’s part numbering system
• Ability to navigate in basic computer applications such as MS Windows and learn specific applications like Oracle and Fuji Cam
• High degree of dexterity and eye coordination to manipulate buttons, switches, hand tools, and knobs on delicate equipment
• Mechanical aptitude with attention to detail for associates operating machinery
• Ability to bend, twist, lift up to 30 pounds, stand for an entire shift, and walk long distances throughout the facility

Qualifications

• 2+ years assembly experience
• Previous SMT Operator experience
• Previous electronics manufacturing experience
• Soldering skills (certificate desirable)
• Experience in a manufacturing environment utilizing automated techniques to install Surface Mount Technology (SMT) and Through-hole Technology (THT) components
• Knowledge/use of IPC-A-610, Acceptance of Electronic Assemblies, workmanship standards
