Machine Operator 2 - SMT Operator/Rework

Celestica is seeking a Machine Operator 2 to join our team in Maple Grove, Minnesota. This role involves setting up and operating SMT machines, inspecting products to IPC-A-610 & J-STD-001 Class 3 standards, and diagnosing defects or problems as they arise.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and align solder paste stencils, applying solder paste evenly and consistently across all apertures.
• Replenish and control SMT components in pick-and-place machines, verifying component positioning, values, and polarity.
• Complete and maintain accurate process documentation.
• Follow engineering-developed process/program documentation to properly process lead or lead-free solder assemblies for acceptable solder joints.
• Review routings against prints to ensure consistency and verify correct programs and revisions on routers.
• Monitor floor stock inventory (e.g., solder paste), track expiration dates, and inform supervisors when supplies are low or expired.
• Perform preventative maintenance (PM) on equipment, including cleaning and scheduled PMs, and identify when further maintenance is needed.
• Learn machine part parameters and programs to optimize machine time usage and produce quality products on a timely basis per prints and routings.
• Collaborate with engineers and technicians to set up and run NPI (New Product Introduction) products through soldering processes.
• Perform periodic hand soldering under a scope for touch-ups and product review of solder joints.
• Use basic hand tools, special fasteners, soldering irons, and measuring devices; measure and record product data as required.
• Perform X-Ray inspection using AXI or Glenbrook equipment to ensure product meets customer expectations.
• Perform rework using the Air-Vac rework machine.
• Conduct hand soldering work under a scope, including tinning components (adding solder to solderable surfaces) prior to SMT placement.
• Train other employees and assist in the orientation of new employees.

Requirements

• Related experience in setup, operation, and troubleshooting of surface mount technology and microscope soldering.
• Experience in programming SMT equipment is highly desirable.
• Must pass J-STD & IPC-610 Certification to qualify for the role.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and read blueprints fluently.
• High school education or equivalent, plus one year of similar manufacturing experience.

Physical Demands

• Work may involve repetitive motion and is performed primarily in a standing position, with occasional sitting, twisting, and stooping.
• Job duties require working with and around chemicals, exposure to odors, and warm temperatures.
• Visual exams (pre-hire and biennial) are required to confirm 20/20 visual acuity (with or without glasses) and passing a standard color vision exam.
• Must be able to perform job functions while using a scope.

Pay

Hourly range: $21.00–$26.00. The final rate may vary based on duties, credentials, experience, or geographic jurisdiction.
