Job Overview

The Machine Operator produces machined parts by programming, setting up, and operating a numerical computer control (CNC) machine; maintaining quality and safety standards; keeping records; maintaining equipment and supplies.

Programming & Setup

  • Studies work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters;
  • Interprets geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T);
  • Programs mills and lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points;
  • Sets tools, offsets, compensation;
  • Calculates requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry;
  • Proves part programs;
  • Sets-up mills and/or lathes by installing and adjusting three-jaw chucks, installing and indicating vices, fixture plates, parallels, tools, attachments, stops;
  • Lifts stock into position either into a vice, three jaw chuck or to a fixture plate/parallels;
  • Verifies settings by measuring positions, first-run part, and sample work pieces;
  • Adheres to international standards;
  • Takes measurements accurately using various measurement tools;
  • Micrometers, calipers, set up and read bore gages.

Maintaining Specifications

  • Detects malfunctions;
  • Troubleshoots processes;
  • Adjusts and reprograms controls;
  • Replaces worn tools;
  • Adheres to quality assurance procedures and processes;
  • Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements;
  • Follows manufacturer's instructions;
  • Traces malfunctions;
  • Calls for repairs.

Qualifications

  • 2-year associates degree is preferred but not required;
  • 3+ years of CNC machining experience required;
  • Ability to read blueprints;
  • Computer skills are preferred;
  • Knowledge of machines, hand tools, and measuring equipment;
  • Knowledge of raw materials being used;
  • Able to communicate effectively;
  • Excellent problem-solving skills;
  • Ideal candidate will have some experience with fabrication or machining;
  • Prefer to have individual to be able to read and interpret drawings;
  • Good references with excellent work attendance and attitude;
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills, along with a keen sense of attention to detail;
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software and G-code/M-code programming;
  • Proficiency in using tools like micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM).
