Machine Learning Engineer

Company Orenda is on a mission to make the grid more efficient with batteries and software. We build and operate energy storage projects in dense urban environments to bridge the gap between renewables and electricity consumption. Orenda Asset Technology is developing the software and hardware platform to operate these projects. We use machine learning to forecast electricity markets and decision algorithms to allocate energy optimally. Our cloud platform connects to on-site energy controls systems to monitor and manage our fleets. We are a dynamic, NYC-based company at the forefront of a new industry. Role Orenda is looking to hire a Machine Learning Engineer to join our Asset Technology team. This individual will advance our forecasting capabilities and expand our models across energy markets. What You’ll Do Devise, iterate on, and deliver timeseries ML algorithms/models to solve novel problems in the energy storage spaceDesign and implement thorough evaluation frameworks for our forecastsFor existing models: improve performance, fine-tune parameters, and enrich featuresPerform statistical analysis on market data and model performanceConfidently communicate your findings via empirical results, thorough documentation, and stakeholder reportsWork closely with software engineers to productionize your models and design APIsIdeate with Orenda’s strategy team on market blueprints and their implementationLearn about energy markets and batteries Qualifications Excellent problem solver with an affinity for interesting and difficult problems and the follow-through to solve themB.S. and 3+ years of relevant experienceDeep understanding of timeseries forecasting, machine learning algorithms, data processing, and model optimization techniques2+ years experience writing clean, maintainable Python code with Machine Learning frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, Tensorflow)Proficiency with AI-driven development workflows and coding agents (Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, etc.)Demonstrated experience crafting, performing, and analyzing experimentsProficiency working in a cloud computing environmentYou take a first principles, mathematically-minded approach to new problemsKeen attention to detail. You do not need someone to inspect your workRelentlessly positive attitude, strong work ethic, and sense of humor Preferred Qualifications (Bonus) Experience in energy marketsSWE background (cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, testing, production-level code) Work Environment This is a full time, in-office position requiring work from our headquarters (Brooklyn, NY) five days a week. In Addition To The Chance To Do Important Work With a Great Team, Orenda Offers a Competitive Compensation Package Designed To Attract And Retain Top Talent Base Salary: The anticipated base salary range for this full-time position in New York City is $100,000-$175,000 per year.
