Machine Learning / AI Algorithm Engineer

Location: Bay Area / Portland, Oregon • Full-time

About the role

We are looking for an Applied AI / Machine Learning Engineer with strong hands-on experience building AI solutions in a fast-moving startup environment. The ideal candidate has practical experience with machine learning, LLMs, model fine-tuning, scripting, and full AI application development. The role requires someone who can move quickly from concept to prototype to production-quality implementation, while making effective use of modern AI development tools such as Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, or similar coding assistants. Experience with agentic AI systems is a significant advantage.

Responsibilities

• Develop and optimize AI/ML algorithms and application components.
• Build scripts, tools, prototypes, and production-ready AI capabilities.
• Fine-tune, adapt, and evaluate models for specific use cases.
• Integrate LLMs, APIs, data pipelines, and AI application workflows.
• Use AI coding tools such as Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, or similar to accelerate development.
• Contribute to the design of agentic AI safety and alignment solutions.
• Evaluate emerging AI models, frameworks, and techniques.
• Help shape CCai's technical direction and product capabilities.

Requirements

• About 5 years of experience in machine learning, AI engineering, applied AI, or related software development.
• Strong Python programming and scripting skills.
• Hands-on experience with machine learning or LLM-based systems.
• Experience fine-tuning, adapting, or evaluating AI models.
• Ability to build full AI applications, prototypes, or production components.
• Familiarity with modern AI development tools and coding assistants.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently in a startup environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with agentic AI systems, tool-calling, workflow orchestration, or multi-step AI applications.
• Experience with AI safety, alignment, guardrails, red teaming, or model monitoring.
• Familiarity with LangChain, LlamaIndex, Hugging Face, PyTorch, TensorFlow, OpenAI APIs, or Anthropic APIs.
• Experience with RAG systems, embeddings, vector databases, or enterprise AI deployment.
• Background in applied research, enterprise software, cybersecurity, or AI governance.
