Administrative Functions

  • Direct the day-to-day functions of the nursing assistants in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Ensure all nursing personnel comply with written policies and procedures.
  • Periodically review department policies and procedures.
  • Make recommendations for revisions.
  • Meet with assigned nursing staff to plan shifts' services, programs, and activities.
  • Maintain the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
  • Ensure nursing service personnel comply with the manual.
  • Make written and oral reports/recommendations.
  • Coordinate nursing services with resident services.
  • Ensure compliance with job descriptions.
  • Participate in quality assurance program.
  • Participate in facility surveys.
  • Review resident's discharge plan.
  • Plan and update resident's discharge plan.
  • Aid in planning nursing services portion of discharge plan.
  • Interpret policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.
  • Complete accident/incident reports.
  • Write resident charge slips and forward to Business Office.
  • Maintain Daily Census Report and submit to Business Office.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc.
  • Agree not to disclose assigned user ID code and password.
  • Agree not to disclose resident’s protected health information.
  • Report any unauthorized attempts to access facility’s information system.

Drug Administration Functions

  • Prepare and administer medications as ordered by the physician.
  • Verify resident identity before administration.
  • Ensure prescribed medication is not administered to another resident.
  • Ensure adequate supply of floor stock medications, supplies, and equipment.
  • Order medications, supplies, and equipment as necessary.
  • Ensure narcotic records are accurate.
  • Notify Nurse Supervisor of discrepancies.
  • Review medication cards for completeness and accuracy.
  • Notify attending physician of automatic stop orders.
  • Dispose of drugs and narcotics as required.

Nursing Care Functions

  • Inform nursing personnel of new admissions.
  • Ensure rooms are ready for new admissions.
  • Greet newly admitted residents.
  • Escort them to their rooms.
  • Participate in resident orientation.
  • Make rounds with physicians.
  • Requisition and arrange for diagnostic and therapeutic services.
  • Consult with resident's physician.
  • Review resident's chart for treatments, medication orders, diets, etc.
  • Implement and maintain nursing objectives and standards.
  • Make periodic checks and evaluations.
  • Ensure proper care by certified nursing assistants.
  • Cooperate with and coordinate social and activity programs.
  • Notify attending physician of accidents/incidents.
  • Notify attending physician and next-of-kin of changes in resident's condition.
  • Carry out restorative and rehabilitative programs.
  • Inspect treatment areas daily.
  • Administer professional services such as catheterization, tube feedings, suction, dressing changes, etc.
  • Use restraints when necessary.
  • Take and record vital signs.
  • Monitor seriously ill residents.
  • Check food brought by family/visitors.
  • Report problem areas to Nurse Supervisor.
  • Ensure residents are checked frequently.
  • Meet with residents and/or family members.
  • Report problem areas to Nurse Supervisor.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents.
  • Assist in arranging transportation for discharged residents.
  • Inform family members of resident's death.
  • Call funeral homes as requested.
  • Follow established post-mortem procedures.

Staff Development

  • Develop and conduct in-service training classes.
  • Implement and maintain orientation program.
  • Aid in standardizing work methods.
  • Aid in training personnel on potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Aid in planning clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
  • Attend and participate in outside training programs.
  • Attend and participate in annual facility in-service training programs.
