Lumber Sales Manager - Building Materials

About the role

This role leads lumber and building materials sales for a company serving contractors, builders, and homeowners in the Springfield market. The position combines outside sales, estimating, and yard oversight, working daily with store and yard teams while also spending time in the field with contractors on larger projects.

Responsibilities

  • Builds and maintains a sales pipeline through proactive outreach, job site visits, and ongoing contractor relationship development
  • Meets regularly with contractors, builders, and homeowners to review projects, interpret plans, and prepare accurate material quotes and take-offs for residential and light commercial work
  • Identifies upsell opportunities and alternative product solutions while maintaining consistent follow-up to close sales and retain contractor relationships
  • Oversees yard operations to keep materials organized and accessible
  • Captures yard inventory counts a minimum of four times per year to maintain accurate stock levels
  • Maintains knowledge of top selling SKUs and seasonal demand trends, and works directly with vendors on product selection, buybacks, and new product opportunities, evaluating stock levels and recommending adjustments based on sales performance and contractor demand
  • Reviews sales performance, gross margin, and departmental expenses, and uses P&L data to guide purchasing, pricing, and sales strategy decisions

Requirements

  • Five or more years of experience in lumber, building materials, or related construction sales
  • Strong estimating skills, including plan reading and take-offs
  • Experience managing yard or delivery teams
  • Experience working with vendors and negotiating product opportunities
  • Experience with inventory management and purchasing decisions
  • Valid driver's license with the ability to pass a motor vehicle record check
  • Forklift certification, or willingness to obtain one within 90 days

Qualifications

  • Existing contractor or builder network within the Springfield market
  • Working knowledge of lumber product categories, seasonal demand, and market pricing trends
  • Comfortable representing the business in the field and at industry events
  • A self-directed approach to building a sales pipeline rather than relying on inbound leads
  • An organized, persistent, and positive approach to account management

Pay

$80,000 to $100,000 per year
