About the role

The Functional Check Flight Pilot (LUH-72) utilizes flight test techniques to perform functional check flights of aircraft to measure performance and handling to determine airworthiness following maintenance or modifications.

Responsibilities

• Perform FCFs and demonstrate aircraft proficiency upon completion of aircraft maintenance or modifications on aircraft.
• Interpret meteorological data as it pertains to filing a flight plan for the navigational course of flight needed for a mission or sortie.
• File flight plans for all flights using authorized navigational processes.
• Compute weight and balance logs for the aircraft being flown.
• Initiate and complete all military flight or maintenance forms to document FCF completion and discrepancies.
• Communicate, troubleshoot, advise and work side by side with military pilots and technicians.
• Determine in accordance with publications and procedures the airworthiness of aircraft prior to release for flight.
• Perform recovery flights and ferry aircraft to additional sites, such as depots.
• Perform troubleshooting procedures of aircraft on the ground and during flight and make appropriate write-ups or give verbal instructions to correct deficiencies.
• Verify forms and records used in the performance of maintenance to ensure they comply with work performed prior to ground or flight checks.
• Run-up aircraft for alert status to perform test on modifications.
• Deploy when required to support contract requirements when FCFs are anticipated.
• Ferry flights as assigned.
• Ensure proper documentation is chronicled.
• May support AS9100-AS9110 internal audits, corrective action requests, assist section, department, and/or program in developing plans to correct identified shortfalls.
• May assist with continual improvement initiatives.
• As qualified may perform Lead pilot duties as designated by the Site Supervision.
• Must be capable of Aircraft Technical Inspection (TI) as additional duty.
• Plan and conduct aircraft technical inspections.
• Lectures, demonstrates, and practical exercises in inspection techniques, procedures, performance evaluation, and operational checks on the power plant, structure, and systems of helicopters powertrains.
• Provide technical guidance to repairs performing aircraft and subsystem maintenance techniques and safety procedures.
• Maintains technical library, inspects systems, subsystems, and components according to applicable technical publications and checklists before, during and after airplane maintenance and modifications.
• Check and troubleshoot systems.
• Annotate records of required maintenance.
• Evaluate operational readiness of aircraft and recommend corrective action.
• Inspect crash-damaged aircraft and estimate time, parts and costs to repair.
• Evaluate maintenance operations and facilities for compliance with directives, technical manuals, work standards, safety procedures, and operational policies.
• Perform maintenance trend analysis and apply production control, quality control and other maintenance management principles and procedures to aircraft maintenance operations.
• Perform other qualified duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school or equivalent required.
• Minimum PIC Hours, 1000 Hours PIC Required.
• Possess a current valid ARMY or FAA Second Class Medical Certificate.
• Possess an instrument rating on their FAA Commercial Certificates.
• Meet the qualification requirements of AR 95 20.
• Currency shall be in accordance with AR 95-1.
• Successfully complete annual flight evaluation conduct IAW AR 95 1 and the appropriate Aircrew Training Manual (ATM).
• The Government reserves the right to have Contractor pilots examined at US Army medical facility when deemed necessary.
• Undergo and successfully complete initially and annually thereafter an Army or FAA second class flight physical.
• Evaluation conducted by An Army/Government Test Flight Evaluator (MTFE).
• Ability to obtain/maintain Security Clearance (NAC-I T1) Public trust.
• All Contractor pilots shall undergo and successfully complete (initially and annually) a flight physical IAW Army Regulation (AR) 95-20, service guidance contained in AR 40-501, AR 95-1, and the appropriate Aircrew Training Manual (ATM).
• Evaluations shall be conducted by An Army/Government Evaluator (Standardization Instructor Pilots (SP) or Instructor Pilots (IP)).
• When the Mission Design Series (MDS) is not supported by the US Army, the evaluator will be approved by AFMD Director.
• Evaluations must meet the requirements of AR 95-1.
• Contract pilots shall not perform flight duties after receiving treatment, medication, or drugs until properly cleared by a designated medical examiner.

Required Skills

• Demonstrated proven and verifiable aviation experience including ethics, ability and professionalism of the highest standards are required for this position.
• Must have demonstrated communication skills, both oral and written.
• Working knowledge for operating navigational and communication equipment installed on the aircraft.
• Capable of computing and annotating weight and balance logs for the aircraft.
