Position Summary
Provide comprehensive nursing care and intervention under the direction of a registered nurse to ensure that the health care needs of individuals receiving services are met. Assist individuals receiving services, as needed, in their day to day activities providing instruction and assistance as necessary.
Principle Duties And Responsibilities
- Assumes all of the responsibilities of a Direct Support Professional (DSP)
- Provides support to DSPs and Registered Nurses for the medical care of students
- Observes, records and/or reports change in physical or mental health status to RN
- Responsible for passing medications and providing prescribed care under the LPN scope of practice as required (wound care, IM shots, read PPD, etc.)
- Reports to program RN for all medical issues and guidance
- Provides comprehensive nursing care, including prevention, detection, and treatment of signs of illness or dysfunction
- Provides routine and emergency nursing intervention as needed/assigned by RN
- Enacts PRN and standing orders as approved by a physician
- Schedules, Attends and/or participates in medical appointments as directed
- Documents pertinent care according to Springbrook Policies & Procedures
- Observing, recording and reporting: symptoms, side effects, reactions, progress, and the effects of medications to the RN
- Performs routine medication room checks to ensure all needed supplies and prescriptions are up to date
- Proficiency with the pharmacy website, Precision Care, and all computer programs and systems utilized to manage, document, and facilitate care
- Follows all policies and procedures of Springbrook Schools and it’s regulators, attending required in-service trainings as needed
- Utilizes constructive suggestions and directives from RN’s and administrators
- Able to act calmly and quickly in emergency situations
- Able to arrive promptly for shift and attend to duties/responsibilities while on the job
- Will serve as a good role model for the participants
- Performs such other duties as may be assigned, and in whatever capacity necessary, as directed by the RN’s
Qualifications, Skills And Knowledge Requirements
- Graduate of an approved practical nursing program, current NYS LPN license
- Two (2) years’ experience working with individuals with Developmental Disabilities preferred, will consider candidates lacking experience
- Awareness of current trends in nursing and nursing care with individuals with special needs preferred
- Duties require professional verbal and written communication skills, positive approaches, and collaboration
- Proficiency in or knowledge of using a variety of computer software and e-mail applications, especially Microsoft Excel, Outlook and Word
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs. independently and assist in lifting weights exceeding 50 lbs.
- Access to reliable transportation or walk between all campus houses
- Meet the requirements to drive Springbrook vehicles as required
- Be able to perform all physical interventions
