About the Role

As supervised and delegated by a Registered Nurse, provides direct patient care in the clinical setting.

Responsibilities

  • Interacts professionally with patients/families; treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.
  • Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Effectively and appropriately communicates with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers, demonstrating customer service excellence through application of positive language principles, appropriate response, and use of constructive problem-solving techniques which foster positive outcomes.
  • Provides direct patient care, consults with nursing staff/providers as required, and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Adequately assesses and reassesses pain; utilizes appropriate pain management techniques and educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of lab requirements and requisitions.
  • Collects a baseline summary of a patient’s medical to include checking and recording body temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, and blood pressure.
  • Maintains accurate and continued documentation appropriately for all assessments, treatments, and evaluations performed; documentation meets current standards and policies.
  • Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts, diseases/surgical conditions, care required, and good judgment.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over a patient’s life span and the skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to the patient population served.
  • Interprets data about the patient’s status to identify each patient’s age-specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
  • Applies principles of sterile techniques and infection control procedures.
  • Follows the six medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  • Maintains current knowledge of medications and IV fluids and their correct administration based on the age of the patient and clinical condition.
  • Assists with the establishment of a plan of care appropriate to problems identified and involves the patient according to capabilities and desires.
  • Identifies and documents goals, anticipated progress, and plans for reevaluation.
  • Assists other nursing staff with the delivery of nursing care.
  • Consults other providers as appropriate to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
  • Coordinates patient services with referring physician/facility.
  • Performs other reasonably related job duties as assigned or requested, within scope of practice.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of orientation checklist and skills/credentials/competency requirements of specific area of work.
  • Able to maintain a high awareness of patient satisfaction and teamwork.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to respond to and cope with emergency situations professionally and calmly.
  • Adaptable to performing well under pressure in a stressful environment and taking appropriate action.
  • Flexible, able to work as needed for appropriate departmental coverage.
  • Basic computer knowledge; proficiency in Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems.
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrates proficient time management skills.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform essential job functions, especially regarding activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.
  • Additional languages preferred.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited program for licensed vocational/practical nurses.
  • Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse License.
  • BLS Certification required.
  • Intravenous Therapy and Blood Certifications preferred.
  • ACLS may be required in certain care areas.
  • Some experience preferred.
