Responsible and accountable for the overall nursing care provided in clinic during a patients visit, including primary care for People Living With HIV/AIDS and Infectious Disease specialty care. Collaborates with other health care providers and attending physicians in providing optimal health outcomes for patients.

Responsibilities

• Provide initial patient assessments including falls screening and vital signs
• Perform phlebotomy, provide SQ/IM injections and place peripheral intravenous lines for IV infusions
• Perform PICC line dressing changes, PICC line removal, and line malfunction interventions including administration of Alteplase
• Serve as a resource and oversee the operational flow of the clinic in collaboration with other nursing staff and medical assistants
• Provide education and follow up for patients on specific disease processes or therapies
• Coordinate care for and monitor patients on injectable therapies including HIV treatment and prevention therapies
• Collaborate with Community Health Workers to outreach to and follow up with high-risk primary care patients
• Serve as a liaison between patients and other members of the treatment team
• Provide nursing services for the Traveler's and Tropical Medicine Clinic when needed
• Interview patients about current problems, medications, and allergies, and reviews medical records for pertinent previous and current information
• Measure and record patients' vital signs, including height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration
• Provide basic patient care and treatments, such as dressing wounds, treating bedsores, administering enemas or douches, applying alcohol rubs, massaging, performing catheterizations, administering routine immunizations, and/or providing nebulizer treatments and visual acuity tests
• Participate in patient treatment regimen, including administering medications (under the supervision of a physician and registered nurse)
• Communicate post-visit findings and participate in the plan of care, in coordination with the appropriate clinical staff
• Perform a variety of office responsibilities: answers phones and takes messages, and performs triage within the scope of licensed practical nursing practice in an accurate and timely manner
• Collect samples, such as blood, urine, or sputum from patients, and perform routine laboratory tests on samples
• Prepare patients for examinations, tests, or treatments and explain procedures
• Assist patients with bathing, dressing, maintaining personal hygiene, transferring in bed, and standing and walking

Qualifications

• Trade/Technical/Vocational Diploma Licensed Practical Nurse required
• Licensed Practical Nurse [LPN - State License] - Generic - HR Only required
• Basic Life Support [BLS Certification] - Data Conversion - Various Issuers preferred
• Medical experience 0-1 year preferred
• Infectious disease/HIV experience preferred
• Proficient in speaking other languages, Spanish and/or Portuguese is strongly preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Basic knowledge of patient education: interviewing and listening skills, teaching and engagement techniques, and understanding of health-related conditions and information
• Ability to accurately perform vital signs and obtain pertinent health information, including but not limited to: temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, height, and weight
• Ability to administer medication; routes of administration may include injections, intravenous, and oral medications
• Knowledge and ability to perform specific procedures and tests as appropriate to the clinical setting
• Ability to communicate in a professional, courteous, clear, and concise manner
