About the role

The Special Education Teacher will teach a varied population of students in a full-day non-public setting. The Teacher implements the program as outlined in each student's IEP, adapting instruction to differing academic, medical, developmental, and technological needs while adhering to the curriculum identified by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). The role demonstrates understanding of and commitment to the organization's mission: helping students achieve their potential and participate as fully as possible in family, school, and community life while striving to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality.

At the Fairmount Campus, the program values the uniqueness of each student and aims to enable them to reach their potential academically, socially, and behaviorally, nurturing their independence now and in the future. The curriculum focuses on building essential skills based on standards and curricula identified by MSDE, including instruction in reading/English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, health, music, fine arts, and career development.

The program operates on an 11-month schedule and is a nonpublic special education day program approved by MSDE.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning, with clear materials and routines for effective management.
• Collaborate with parents, guardians, classroom staff, student team members, and IEP team members, and participate in the professional learning community.
• Communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and guardians, considering disability-based needs and providing clear expectations and feedback.
• Demonstrate knowledge of instruction using special education best practices, effective lesson plans, and technology to engage students.
• Utilize data to inform instruction through formative and summative data collection systems.
• Demonstrate knowledge of student strengths and needs, providing appropriate accommodations and maintaining high expectations.
• Plan and prepare using data from IEP goals and assessments, incorporating multiple special education strategies and modalities.
• Develop measurable short- and long-term plans aligned with content, curriculum, and state standards, incorporating technology and multidisciplinary input.
• Participate in school-based committees, special projects, and provide mentorship to colleagues as appropriate.

Requirements

• Eligibility for MSDE Special Education Certificate in Infant-Grade 3, Grades 1-8, or 6-Adult, based on assignment.
• If holding a Maryland Conditional Certificate in Special Education, must complete all requirements for a Professional Special Education Certificate as outlined by MSDE.
• Special Education Teacher I: Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education or appropriate content area.
• Special Education Teacher II: Master’s Degree in Special Education or appropriate content area.
• Special Education Teacher III: Master’s Degree in Special Education or appropriate content area, plus 30 additional academic credits.
• Special Education Teacher IV: Master’s Degree in Special Education or appropriate content area, plus 60 or more additional academic credits (may include PhD/EdD).
• Previous teaching experience preferred but not required.
• PCM training will be provided; must achieve and maintain certification at the “Practitioner” level (or higher) according to departmental policy.

Pay

Salary range: $62,480.00 – $130,153.00 per year.
