Longshoreman II - Terminal

Overview

The Longshoreman position involves advanced labor tasks in vessel holds and terminal operations. Employees are expected to have substantial experience and specialized training to perform complex cargo handling, equipment operation, and securing procedures. The role demands a strong understanding of cargo stowage and safety practices in high‑risk environments. Candidates must be proficient in a wide range of tasks and tools, capable of troubleshooting common issues and making minor adjustments, work with minimal supervision, and contribute to process improvements. May lead small teams or mentor junior staff. An active TWIC card and forklift experience are required.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience in vessel hold operations and advanced cargo handling.
• Completion of specialized training in PIT operation, cargo securing, and equipment use.
• Proficiency in operating forklifts, yard mules, chain saws, and chop saws.
• Strong understanding of cargo stowage principles and safety standards.
• Physical ability to perform demanding tasks in varied environmental conditions.
• Reliable, safety‑conscious, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
• Active TWIC card.
• Forklift experience.

Responsibilities

• Hook cargoes in the hold for unloading and unhook during loading onto the vessel.
• Understand cargo stowage, dunnage, and securing requirements.
• Operate PITs, small forklifts, or yard mules to stow cargo on the vessel.
• Use chain saws and chop saws proficiently.
• Secure cargo with lashings and carpentry, and safely remove lashings/securements.
• Visually inspect lifting gear.
• Maintain a clean work area.
• Work with minimal supervision, contribute to process improvements, and may lead small teams or mentor junior staff.
