About the role

Long-Term Substitute Teachers ensure all students receive equal instructional opportunities and foster a classroom environment where teaching and learning are challenging, dynamic, and comprehensive. The essential curriculum is grounded in the belief that education aims to promote personal growth, develop individual talents and values, build knowledge, and cultivate understanding.

Responsibilities

• Provide for instructional needs and interests of students through effective daily lesson planning.
• Create and maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning, utilizing classroom time effectively.
• Demonstrate a variety of teaching techniques and use diverse instructional resources to implement approved curriculum.
• Use evaluation to promote student growth intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally.
• Demonstrate fair, firm, and consistent behavior toward students and promote self-discipline.
• Communicate effectively and maintain positive interpersonal relations with students, parents, staff, and the community.
• Guide the learning process toward achieving school system goals and objectives by following school board policies and administrative procedures.
• Assist administration and staff in fulfilling the school’s mission by applying ethical standards in professional relationships.
• Maintain and improve professional competencies.
• Supervise students in various school settings (classrooms, hallways, playgrounds, etc.).
• Maintain appropriate records and monitor the use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the school principal.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree or 60 college credits.
• Knowledge and use of culturally responsive practices.
• Regular and predictable attendance.
• Capability to perform essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
• MSDE-issued professional teacher certificate with appropriate content endorsement.
• Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
• Bilingual (Spanish).
• Familiarity with FCPS policies, goals, and programs.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to speak clearly and audibly in person, on the telephone, and before groups.
• Ability to travel to school and local sites, sometimes with little notice.
• Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
• Ability to sit for extended periods.
• Ability to reach with hands and arms, and sufficient manual dexterity to use office technology.
• Sufficient mobility to move about the work area.
• Sufficient vision to read printed materials, see distant objects clearly, and distinguish colors and objects.
• Sufficient hearing to comprehend conversations in person and on the telephone, and distinguish sounds up to twenty feet.
• Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
• Occasional lifting of up to fifteen pounds.

Work Environment

Moderate noise typical of a classroom, office, or meeting setting (e.g., computers, printers, conversations, group discussions).
