Long-Term Substitute Teacher, Non-Certified ELA

Under limited supervision, the long-term substitute teacher serves as a temporary educator responsible for operating a safe, orderly, and positive classroom environment while the regular classroom teacher position is anticipated to be vacant for 6 or more months. The role involves managing the classroom and providing instruction based on the regular teacher's lesson plans, grade-level PLC-developed plans, or self-developed plans in consultation with the school.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures.
• Provide meaningful instruction to students following established lesson plans and routines.
• Review and implement classroom routines, procedures, and instructional strategies.
• Participate in grade-level meetings, faculty meetings, student intervention teams, and other assigned committees.
• Establish and maintain a safe and orderly learning environment.
• Take reasonable measures to protect students, facilities, and materials.
• Communicate clearly and effectively with students, families, and school personnel.
• Report student injuries, accidents, illnesses, or breaches of the district's Code of Student Conduct to administration promptly.
• Demonstrate flexibility to substitute in any grade level or course as assigned.
• Perform related duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

• Knowledge of lesson plan development principles and practices.
• Ability to implement effective classroom management strategies.
• Understanding of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
• Familiarity with county and school board policies, procedures, and standards.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in computers and software, including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
• Ability to solve problems using sound judgment.
• Capability to establish and maintain positive relationships across departments, agencies, and the public.
• Ability to respond professionally to situations while maintaining a personable demeanor.
• Willingness to learn and use specialized tools, equipment, or software.

Qualifications

21st Day Substitutes:

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Active NC teaching license.
• Three years of successful teaching experience preferred.

Certified Long-term Substitute:

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Active or expired teaching license.
• Three years of teaching experience preferred.

Non-Certified Long-term Substitute:

• High school diploma.
• At least one year of successful experience working in an educational environment supervising children preferred.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Special Requirements

• Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license or provide own transportation.
• Ability to travel to school district buildings and professional meetings.

Pay

• 21st Day Substitute (Certified): Daily rate.
• Certified Long-term Substitute: $151 per day.
• Non-Certified Long-term Substitute: $129 per day.

Schedule

Full-time, 10-month position.
