About the role

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Intermediate Special Education and/or Director of Pupil and Special Education Services, to maximize the learning experience of students with special needs in academics, social-emotional, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living by implementing district-approved curriculum.

Responsibilities

  • Provides specialized instruction as well as accommodations/modifications for students with disabilities.
  • Collaborates with general education teachers regarding students with disabilities.
  • Conducts assessments, testing, and diagnostic evaluations of students to identify learning issues, social-behavioral needs, and recommend corrective procedures.
  • Facilitates parent placement team (PPT) meetings and assists in developing Individual Education Plans (IEP) for students.
  • Assists students and teaching staff in implementing students' IEPs and behavior management plans.
  • Coordinates with outside agencies, organizations, and institutions, including state and federal authorities as needed.
  • Coordinates with administrators and other teaching staff to ascertain individual students' abilities and needs.
  • Continues to acquire special knowledge and learn current developments in the educational field through seminars, workshops, professional meetings, research, and maintaining professional relationships.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping and provides student information as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Facilitates family engagement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate books, aids, and other supplies and equipment, maintaining inventory records.
  • Designs, revises, and maintains instructional programs developed from student IEPs.
  • Demonstrates team leadership skills (monitoring, assigning, and directing) for a group of paraprofessionals/tutors/coaches.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and central office administration.

Requirements

  • Must possess CT certification (065) Comprehensive Special Education, Gr. PreK-12, or (165) Comprehensive Special Education, Gr. K-12.
  • ABA experience strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of Special Education principles, theories, testing, and methods.
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
  • Works in standard office and school building environments.

Terms of Employment

Salary and benefits in accordance with the negotiated agreement between the Windsor Board of Education and the Windsor Education Association.
