Long Term Substitute - Special Education Teacher - Martha Brown Middle School

About the Role

Under the general supervision of the Director of Secondary Special Education and Building Administrators, this position meets the needs of students with special needs in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living by implementing district-approved curriculum. The role involves documenting teaching and student progress, addressing students' specific needs, and providing a safe and optimal learning environment.

Responsibilities

• Conduct assessments, testing, and diagnostic examinations to identify learning issues and recommend corrective procedures.
• Participate in Student Support Teams (SSTs) and assist in developing Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) for students.
• Assist students and teaching staff in implementing IEPs and behavior management plans.
• Coordinate with administrators and teaching staff to assess individual student abilities and needs, including those with special needs, and familiarize stakeholders with social work services.
• Serve as a resource to students and parents, providing counseling to support personal growth, self-understanding, and behavioral management; act as a liaison between home and school.
• Acquire professional knowledge and stay current with developments in the educational field through seminars, workshops, professional meetings, research, and maintaining relationships with higher education institutions and the business community.
• Organize and maintain accurate record-keeping systems, providing student information to prospective colleges and employers as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
• Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
• Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and central office administrators.

Requirements

• New York State Certification in Students with Disabilities (Grades 7-12) required.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching.
• Master’s Degree in Special Education.
• Successful prior special education teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.

• Knowledge of Special Education principles, theories, testing, and methods, as well as strategies for maximizing the educational experience of students with special needs.
• Knowledge of differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
• Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
• Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
• Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
• Ability to organize and coordinate work effectively.
• Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
• Ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
