Job Type: Full-time, non-exempt (37.5 hours per week)

About the role

The purpose of this position is to maintain accuracy and working conditions of all key systems and lock hardware in Durham County's buildings. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Responsibilities

• Responds to requests for service for installation, maintenance, and repair of all types of door hardware and locking devices in Durham County government buildings
• Installs and maintains commercial door hardware including exit devices, door closers, magnetic locks, electric strikes, automatic door operators, and other related devices
• Disassembles mechanical and electrical locking devices and repairs or replaces parts as needed
• Re-keys locks and cuts new or duplicate keys as needed
• Maintains key control accountability of all keys issued and/or produced
• Manages lock shop; orders and maintains locking supplies
• Provides cost estimates for repairs, installations, and maintenance
• Supports carpenters and other trades as needed
• Maintains records of work performed and prepares reports as needed
• Performs general building maintenance work as needed
• Performs other related tasks as required

Requirements

• High School Graduation or GED equivalent
• Two (2) years of locksmith or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
• North Carolina Locksmith License
• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history

Skills

• General knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment, tools, and techniques of mechanical equipment repair
• Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with equipment maintenance work
• Skills in the operation of the tools and equipment used in the trade
• Skills in computer applications, work order systems, and keying systems
• Knowledge of applicable Life Safety and egress codes
• Ability to diagnose mechanical trouble in small machines and mechanical equipment
• Ability to understand and carry out detailed oral and written instructions
• Ability to plan and supervise other employees
• Ability to repair and install Mogul and Paracentric locks for detention facilities
• Ability to prepare estimates and order materials for locking systems and repair jobs
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under pressure to meet deadlines
• Ability to maintain working relationships with a diverse population

Physical Demands

Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, climbing, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of the fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Pay

Salary range: $51,726.00 - $65,000.00

• May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and emergencies (man-made or natural) to meet the business needs of Durham County
