Description
General Purpose
Responsible for accurately locating underground water and wastewater utility lines.
Examples of Duties
- Assists in locating water and wastewater lines prior to excavation
- Responds to complaints regarding water leaks, low water pressure, water quality issues, and / or no water
- Responds to complaints regarding wastewater backups, stoppages, and / or overflows
- Makes contact with residents and business owners in area where water / wastewater services may be interrupted and provides an explanation as well as an estimated time frame when services may be restored
- Affixes contact with equipment and tools in proper working order, performs routine cleaning and maintenance as directed
- Reports equipment and tool defects to supervisor
- Performs required labor involved in the construction and maintenance of water and wastewater lines as part of a crew, to include street maintenance, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, service, meter and pipe repairs
- Reads water meters as needed
- Cuts, fits, lays, repairs, taps, cleans, and flushes water and sewer mains
- Installs fire hydrants and other appendages
- Serves water supply, sewer lift stations, and other related pumps
- Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the water, sewer, and street department
- Mows grass, trims hedges, and cuts weeds as needed
- Picks up trash and litter as needed
- May assist with repairs and installation of street signage as needed
- Removes and replaces water meters
Typical Qualifications
- Education and Experience:
- (A) Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
- (B) Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- (A) Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities.
- (B) Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
- (C) Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; ability to work safely; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the general public; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Supplemental Information
- Special Requirements:
- Valid Oklahoma State Driver's License, or the ability to obtain, prior to date of hire.
- Level D Water and Wastewater State Certification, or the ability to obtain as required.
