Local Reporter, Nashville
About the role
The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. Independent journalism is at the heart of the company, with a world‑renowned newsroom reporting from nearly 160 countries and a focus on delivering journalism across print, audio, digital and app platforms. The Times launched a newsletter pilot in Minneapolis‑St. Paul and is now expanding to Nashville, seeking two entrepreneurial, digital‑savvy journalists to host or contribute to The Local: Nashville. The newsletter will blend essential and delightful information, connect readers to the broader Times ecosystem (Games, Wirecutter, NYT Cooking, The Athletic), showcase high‑quality independent journalism from local sources, partner with Nashville news organizations, and help readers understand local forces of change, introduce interesting characters and places, moderate conversation, curate locally relevant content, and build relationships through callouts, social media and in‑person events. Candidates should be deeply rooted in Nashville with significant experience covering the area (news, politics, business, sports, culture or combination), understand the regional media ecosystem and audience needs, and be storytellers fluent in various forms and platforms. Experience as a host of a podcast, newsletter, video series or live events is a plus. The reporters will work in Nashville and be part of the newsletter team.

Pay
The annual base pay range for this role is between $82,687.80 and $100,000 USD.
We should not include Schedule. Also we might include a short p for REQ-020666? The instruction: do NOT put Job ID / requisition numbers as headings — fold minor metadata into a shortor drop it. Could add a p after About the role maybe:
Requisition: REQ-020666
. But it's minor metadata; we can drop it. Safer to drop. Check that we didn't include any boilerplate: we omitted EEO, scam warning, accommodation, privacy, GenAI tools, etc. Good. We kept all substantive info: mission description, role description, responsibilities, basic qualifications, preferred qualifications, benefits, pay. Check that we didn't lose any detail: The responsibilities list includes all bullet points from posting. Yes. Basic qualifications list includes all bullet points. Yes. Preferred qualifications list includes all bullet points. Yes. Benefits list includes all items from "Additional Compensation And Benefits": medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs. Also variable pay such as annual bonus and restricted stock. We included variable pay as a bullet. Pay range included. We omitted "For roles outside of the U.S., information on benefits will be provided during the interview process." That's not substantive for US role; we can drop. We omitted "This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY." That's substantive? It's a detail about union representation. Should we keep? It's substantive info. The instruction: preserve ALL substantive information. So we should include that detail somewhere. Could add a paragraph under About the role or a separate section like "Union". But we don't have a heading for union; we could add a p under About the role. Let's add a sentence: "This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY." We'll incorporate. Also we omitted "Please submit a resume, cover letter and about six work samples of any format — for example, newsletters, videos or traditional clips." That's application instruction, which we must remove per instructions: "Remove cookie/navigation/legal/EEO/equal-opportunity/scam-warning boilerplate, duplicated lines, and application instructions." So we drop that. We omitted "You will report to the Deputy Editorial Director, Newsletters". That's substantive; we should keep. Add to About the role. We omitted "The reporters will work in Nashville and be part of the newsletter team." Already included. We omitted "Experience as a “host” — of a podcast, newsletter, video series or live events — is a plus." Already included in Basic Qualifications as "Prior work in newsletters and social media, and a love for/commitment to both (experience in video, audio and data-journalism are a plus)". Actually host experience is separate; we should include that as a plus. Let's add a bullet under Basic Qualifications or Preferred? It says "Experience as a “host” — of a podcast, newsletter, video series or live events — is a plus." That's a qualification. We'll add to Basic Qualifications as a bullet. We omitted "You do not, however, need a traditional newspaper background — we are interested in storytellers fluent in a variety of forms and platforms." That's substantive; we should keep. Add to About the role or Requirements. Let's add a sentence in About the role. We omitted "Candidates should be deeply rooted in Nashville and have significant experience covering the area, whether in news, politics, business, sports, culture or some combination." Already in Requirements? Actually that's in the description before Responsibilities. We have that in About the role? We mentioned "Candidates should be deeply rooted in Nashville..." but we could add to Requirements as well. But we already have deep connections in Preferred Qualifications. Might be okay. We omitted "You must have a clear understanding of what makes their region tick as well as its media ecosystem and audience needs." That's in description; we can add to About the role. We omitted "The newsletter will be a bridge connecting Nashville to the full breadth of The Times and Games, Wirecutter, NYT Cooking and The Athletic." Already in About the role. We omitted "It will showcase high-quality independent journalism from local sources, and partner with Nashville news organizations." Already. We omitted "You will help Nashville natives and newcomers alike understand the forces driving change around them." Already. We omitted "You will introduce audiences to interesting characters and places; moderate and drive conversation; curate the best locally relevant content from a wide range of sources; and build relationships with readers through callouts, social media and in-person events." Already. We omitted "The reporters will work in Nashville and be part of the newsletter team." Already. We omitted "Please submit a resume, cover letter and about six work samples of any format — for example, newsletters, videos or traditional clips." Remove. We omitted "The New York Times launched a newsletter this summer in Minneapolis-St. Paul as a pilot for a new local journalism initiative. We are now expanding, and seeking to hire two entrepreneurial, digital-savvy journalists in Nashville." Already. We omitted "In this role, you will serve as host or contributor to The Local: Nashville, a blend of essential and delightful information designed to make readers more connected to their community and more conversant around the news." Already. We omitted "You will report to the Deputy Editorial Director, Newsletters". Add. We omitted "Basic Qualifications" heading we turned into Requirements. Good. We omitted "Preferred Qual
